The legal team at global reinsurer Swiss Re, led by group chief legal officer Hermann Geiger, is known industry-wide for its operational excellence. The team consists of senior lawyers that cover a broad spectrum of areas for the group, including M&A and investments, capital markets funding transactions, structured reinsurance transactions and matters relating to the operations of Swiss Re treasury and asset management. Many of the lawyers within the corporate functions and asset management legal team, led by Jennifer Parets, have been with Swiss Re for over 10 years, and represent a highly diverse range of specialist legal disciplines throughout their 30 members. The group legal team continues to be at the forefront of strategic change to the operating of Swiss Re as well as being a significant contributor to the implementation of the business units’ strategic initiatives. This includes, in part, supporting certain strategically important transactions as the business looks to expand the products that it can offer to its clients and the geographical scope of the business as it pushes into high growth markets. The team has pushed to be seen as a strategic partner to the business, often leading or co-leading projects rather than serving in a traditional pure legal adviser role. A recent example saw a member of the legal team co-lead the group wide project to create a service company structure.
