Zürcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) is the largest cantonal bank and fourth largest bank in Switzerland. Tom Fischer, the newly appointed general counsel, will take over the management of legal, tax and compliance reporting directly to Martin Scholl, CEO of ZKB. He takes over from Othmar Strasser who is retiring this year after a 23 year tenure. Strasser has been an influential figure in banking in Zurich and across Switzerland, and leaves behind a distinguished team that is trained to provide the highest-level of advice and support to the business. The legal team has long established its sturdy position as central decision makers at the bank, managing a number of high profile cases and acquisitions over the years. As the largest of its kind, ZKB has often been the first to take steps to advance the remit of the cantonal banks. Unlike many similar banks, ZKB maintains interests outside of Switzerland having regional advisory offices in Beijing, Mumbai, Singapore, Panama, and Sao Paulo; meaning a slightly different dynamic is needed in the legal team. With over 5,100 employees and total assets of CHF 154bn the legal team has been part of the banks integration into the Swiss capital market.
