The legal team at Metalor Technologies, a leading participant in the field of precious metals and advanced materials, is comprised of four lawyers and led by group general counsel Jose Camino who is responsible for all legal affairs and the compliance department. ‘Our approach is to find solutions for our customers to help them to do better business without compromising our values’, says Camino. The legal team is required to deal with matters in regard to the highly-regulated metals industry, in particular with regards to compliance-related work to maintain the reputation of the company. The organisation is very lean and flat, with all members of the department reporting directly to Camino. ‘An important element is that even though two members of the team are based abroad – one in China and one in the US – we have established a direct reporting line to me and not to the regional management. I felt, and the Metalor board agrees as well, that the legal and compliance function is and should continue to be autonomous from the business side’, explains Camino. The legal team consider themselves ‘generalist business lawyers’ with the goal of being involved in business matters early to better understand and serve the internal customers. Camino says that the area that has evolved the most is the department’s approach to compliance. ‘We have moved from a project approach to a process, especially in terms of all the external audits we have to pass on a yearly basis. Because my team works all year round on that, the audits have become more of a verification that the things are done properly and we can continue on cruise speed’, adds Camino.
