General counsel Thailand and general counsel for homecare Southeast Asia | Unilever Thai Trading
What are the most significant cases and transactions that you have recently been involved in?
I led our team in strategising and advising on a complex M&A deal in Thailand. Specifically, I spearheaded the business disposal of the multi-level marketing business (U-Life) in Thailand. This showcased my invaluable legal counsel in high-stake transactions, ensuring compliance, mitigating risks, and facilitating impactful business outcome.
Also, I successfully led internal initiatives to manage longstanding debts for the company. Overall, the company has achieved significant debt reduction and record cleanup, while successfully recovering receivables previously thought irrecoverable.
How do you see the general counsel role evolving in Thailand over the next five-ten years?
As the organisation grows and the legal landscape changes, the role of the general counsel evolves from simply providing sound legal advice to becoming a trusted business partner. They become more involved in strategic decisions, risk management, and overall business operations. This transition requires not only legal expertise but also strategic thinking and leadership skills to effectively navigate the complex challenges faced by modern businesses. With the evolving technology landscape, I believe the role of the general counsel also encompasses implementing technological solutions to drive efficiency, cost savings, and better outcomes.
How do you motivate and manage your legal team well?
First and foremost, my priority is to create an inclusive work environment where every team member feels valued and empowered. In both team meetings and one-on-one sessions, I foster open communication, actively listening to their concerns, ideas, and feedback, ensuring each contribution is acknowledged and appreciated. In addition, I strive to understand their individual purposes, both in their work and in life, as I believe this understanding is crucial for engaging them effectively.
Secondly, it is important to set clear and measurable objectives, aligning individual targets with our broader organisational vision to drive motivation and accountability. Regularly monitoring progress towards our goals is also vital for maintaining momentum and ensuring alignment.
Lastly, leading by example is fundamental to my leadership approach. By embodying the values and principles that I expect from my team, I inspire them to do the same.
