Head of legal and compliance | Thai Samsung Electronics

What are the most significant cases or transactions that you have recently been involved in?

As the head of legal and compliance at Thai Samsung Electronics since 2019, my team has contributed to various cases and high-profile transactions. Samsung constantly pushes itself toward innovation, which requires all of us to maintain our agility and responsiveness to changes in the market. Our ability to adapt quickly and execute efficiently has become the most highlighted characteristic of our organisation.

How do you see the general counsel role evolving in Thailand over the next five-ten years?

The role of the general counsel is likely to evolve significantly over the next five to ten years. Technological advancements force laws to keep pace, thereby creating increased regulatory complexity. General counsel will need to keep up with new technology, being one step ahead and preparing for legal challenges while balancing business needs and changing expectations. The general counsel may increasingly become more of a strategic advisory role for internal parties, focusing on providing guidance on legitimate business solutions and assisting internal teams in navigating regulatory challenges.

Are the effects of AI on the legal world overplayed, or underplayed

Legal-related AI technology may be in the early stages of adoption. It remains to be seen whether it is overplayed or underplayed at this stage. While it could conceptually benefit legal professions by reducing certain workloads, particularly repetitive tasks, the legal works produced by AI nowadays still need to be reviewed by an actual legal professional. Some might argue that this creates additional workload instead of reducing it. It is probably safe to say that regardless of the advancement of AI technology in the legal world, at the end of the day, the work generated by AI would still need to be vetted by a legal professional, particularly when it comes to complex and multi-layered legal advice. That said, the technology is still being developed and adapted, and the situation might improve.
