Covering Turkey, Caucasus, Central Asia and the Dogadan tea business operations (“TCCA”), the regional legal team in Turkey at global beverage company Coca-Cola has remained a strategic business partner that produces high quality, timely legal service and ensures corporate governance. Since a recent internal restructure, the Coca-Cola TCCA is led by Zeynep Derman Küçükönder. She is the legal director of the Coca-Cola TCCA business unit and, in addition, the legal director of Middle East and North Africa. The goal of the legal team of eleven is to focus on ways of simplification and efficiency while providing legal counselling to the business. The Coca-Cola TCCA legal team reviews processes periodically to assess risks and revises them to be more agile without compromising compliance. In the last year the team has won a very important intellectual property case in Central Asia which had been ongoing for the past three years. ‘This win is a historic success for the company but also it gave us the chance of exchanging thoughts with our primary stakeholders in the country about how the intellectual property rights could be better protected and how intellectual property legislations could be reshaped to ensure this protection’, explains Küçükönder. Additionally the team has implemented a “sharepoint” site as one stop shop for business colleagues. The site aims to be a useful resource for frequently asked questions, contract templates as well as archiving previous legal communications and training materials. In the same year, team has passed the internal audit which has proven their efforts around ensuring governance all the time.
