In the last year the GSK legal team in Turkey has restructured and changed its regional focus and strategy. In March 2018, Yelda Dogan Yasarturk was appointed head of legal, Middle East and Africa (MEA), consumer healthcare covering 33 countries and leads nine lawyers based in different countries of the MEA region. Following this change, Asli Kumbaraci Keskin was recently appointed head of legal Turkey as of July 2018 and is also responsible for the Near East and direct distribution markets in addition to Turkey. She provides legal support to both pharmaceutical and consumer healthcare legal operations in Turkey. The team of nine international in-house lawyers supports GSK’s consumer healthcare legal operations across the region and is highly experienced and skilled at leading the healthcare giant through the region’s tricky compliance and commercial needs. Highlighting this initiative, Yasarturk identifies that the team, ‘enhanced the idea that involvement of legal in risky and regulated areas and, competition law related matters, is a key to success for business continuity. Hence, I can say that the most important development or change is to increase the perception of the legal department [to] not only [be] seen as a legal service provider but also seen as a strategic decision maker and business partner’. Due to high risk nature of the MEA region, the team builds strong partnerships and trust with the business and support functions at the local and above country levels, one of the key milestones which helped to create value. The team skilfully works, according to Yasarturk, to ‘propose alternatives or solutions to manage risks with a high degree of business perspective and commercial alignment with business priorities [motivating] us a lot while putting the patient and GSK values at the heart of legal decisions’.
