What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
The economic crisis and subsequent inflation were the biggest challenge for us this past year, but we concentrated on adaptation efforts to minimise company damage. The economic situation affected company decision-making related to new investments and employee policies, but also forced us to be more detailed in our strategic thinking and poised to impact the company’s balance sheet.
In your opinion, what areas should in-house lawyers focus on over the next few years to prove value to their organisations in Türkiye?
In-house lawyers should be more cautious in making important decisions on behalf of their organisations, but also more active in their role as decision makers. The economic crisis reminded us that in-house lawyers exist not only to remedy damages, but also to prevent risk.
Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?
Together with the information technologies department, we recently worked to create a software that automates the contract drafting process. This not only shortened standard contract drafting procedure, but also minimised human error prone to cropping up in this process. As it was an internal product, it was created at no extra cost and expertly tailored to company-specific needs.
