Senior legal counsel | Getir
What has been the number one challenge that has impacted you over the past year?
After working at the same place for seven years, I began working at Getir. In my third month at Getir, there was a layoff decision made, much like at many other technology companies. During this period, a strategy had to be devised to terminate the employment contracts of hundreds of employees.
As the senior lawyer of the employment law team, I was one of the four people who had to create this strategy. However, at that time, I was not sure if my own employment contract would be terminated. Under these uncertain circumstances, I worked very long hours and days to implement a strategy in order to provide the highest contribution and benefit to the company. I was not terminated, which I discovered later, but worked with my teammates to complete this process for weeks. The layoff project was a very difficult process psychologically and indisputably my number one challenge of the last year.
Can you outline your role in the legal function of your organisation and any significant cases or transactions you were involved in?
I work in the legal operations department of the company, on matters pertaining to real estate and labour law. I work on leasing all head offices and warehouses, which are the sales points for the company, and solve all legal issues relating to our real estate. In addition to this, I provide legal support to all departments of the company in terms of labour law regarding all employees of Getir, which has approximately three thousand employees.
In what ways do you see your legal role evolving over the next few years?
I have had two separate performance assessment periods at the company. During both periods, I received the highest performance grades awarded in the company’s legal department. The written and verbal comments from my managers, in-departmental and non-departmental colleagues, were also very positive. In this context, I think that my position as well as the legal department generally, will become more important in time leading to many mor opportunities arising, especially ones with a managerial aspect which is in line with my career goals.
