Deputy general manager, legal and corporate communications | GAMA Energy
Aybars Yağız
Deputy general manager, legal and corporate communications | GAMA Energy
Team size: Eight
What are the most significant cases and/or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?
We have been more inclined to apply preventive dispute resolution methods. It starts with a pre-negotiation internal analysis, followed by identifying the BATNA of the story. Then the findings will be discussed with the counterparty through online (soft) meetings to find a common ground. It can lead to a physical meeting, and if not conclusive, to a mediation stage. All stages are handled delicately by the team.
Naturally, there are certain incidents that result in formal disputes despite the preventive efforts. These usually concern the breach of principle of non-retroactivity of laws by the public authorities. In fact, this breach has repeated so many times, that we have even prepared a template petition set. We are also heavily involved in M&A deals and funding structures.
What strategic priorities are guiding you and your team in 2024?
We have identified more global strategies also applicable to me and the team. I certainly favour the “Start-up Investor and Business Incubator” pillar of our strategy, which includes adapting and investing to a variety of sectors concerning our main field of activity, energy. This surely requires our accurate input and consultancy.
Another strategy we are following is to achieve an “Unmanned Autonomous Company” title by digital transformation and providing end-to-end solutions. This has a tiring but efficient outcome, that requires us to first describe the processes and then familiarise with all other company works for a smooth integration. Naturally, a legal colleague will understand almost all aspects of the work, including engineering, finance and corporate communications.
Do you have a cause, business-related or otherwise, that you are passionate about?
My current passion is understanding and being able to fully utilise what AI offers. The struggle for companies is to waste enormous time building and then operating a system, which might be as quick task for AI. I always imagine scenarios where no single moment is wasted, which can happen with an enhanced AI integration. This applies to my life plans as well, outside my business life. I hope in ten years, I will find this wish childish.
