Could you share with us the story of your path to becoming an in-house counsel? What motivated you to choose this career path?
My journey to becoming an in-house counsel began with a strong passion for both law and business. During my studies, I developed a keen interest in corporate law and saw how legal expertise could drive business success. This motivated me to pursue internships and gain practical experience in corporate legal departments, where I honed my skills in contract negotiation, compliance, and risk management.
The dynamic environment and the opportunity to work closely with business stakeholders further fuelled my desire to pursue a career as an in-house counsel, where I could contribute directly to strategic decision-making and legal matters within a company.
In your role as an in-house counsel, what are the main responsibilities and tasks you handle on a day-to-day basis?
As an in-house counsel, I handle a range of responsibilities and tasks on a day-to-day basis. One of my main duties is managing the company’s industry-specific compliance and corporate compliance processes. Within this scope, I work to ensure that the company’s practices align with regulations relevant to the industry and manage potential risks associated with non-compliance. Additionally, I oversee the implementation of corporate compliance processes prioritised within the framework of sustainability.
I regularly review and draft contracts on various areas to ensure they comply with legal standards and protect the company’s interests. I also provide legal guidance and support to various departments within the organisation, such as human resources, finance, and operations, addressing legal issues that arise in their day-to-day activities.
Overall, my role involves ensuring legal compliance, managing risks, and providing strategic legal support to facilitate the company’s operations and growth within a complex regulatory environment.
What are some of the key challenges you have faced as a rising star in-house counsel, and how have you overcome them?
As a rising star in-house counsel, I have encountered several key challenges that have tested my skills and abilities. One significant challenge has been managing multiple and diverse legal issues simultaneously, ranging from contract negotiations to regulatory compliance matters. To overcome this challenge, I have honed my time management and prioritisation skills, ensuring that urgent matters are addressed promptly, while also allocating time for long-term projects and strategic initiatives.
Another challenge has been navigating complex legal landscapes in different jurisdictions or industries. To address this, I have invested time in continuous learning and staying updated on legal developments relevant to the company’s operations. Building strong relationships with internal stakeholders and external legal experts has also been crucial in gaining insights and expertise in specialised areas of law.
Additionally, as a rising star, I have focused on developing strong communication and negotiation skills to effectively advocate for the company’s interests while fostering collaborative relationships with all parties involved in legal matters. These strategies have helped me overcome challenges and continue to grow as a successful in-house counsel.
