Could you share with us the story of your path to becoming an in-house counsel? What motivated you to choose this career path?

I began my journey towards becoming an in-house counsel by first obtaining a law degree and gaining experience in various legal roles. After consulting companies as a founding lawyer for several years, I developed a strong interest in corporate law and saw the value in being able to work closely with client companies to provide legal guidance on a wide range of issues. What ultimately motivated me to pursue a career as an in-house counsel was the opportunity to become a trusted advisor and provide sound legal advice to help companies achieve their goals, and play a vital role in helping them navigate complex legal challenges. Overall, I was drawn to the idea of being able to build long-term relationships with clients and be able to work closely with clients and different departments, and have a direct impact on the strategic decisions of a business.

In your role as an in-house counsel, what are the main responsibilities and tasks you handle on a day-to-day basis?

As an in-house counsel, my main responsibilities and tasks on a day-to-day basis include providing legal advice and guidance to the company on various matters, reviewing and drafting contracts, policies, and agreements, conducting legal research, managing litigation and legal disputes, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations, and working closely with all departments to address legal issues and mitigate risks. Additionally, I also am participating in negotiating settlements and representing the company in negotiations. My role involves proactively identifying and addressing risk factors to protect the company’s interests and support its business objectives.

What are some of the key challenges you have faced as a rising star in-house counsel, and how have you overcome them?

As a rising star in-house counsel, I have faced several key challenges during my journey, including navigating the complexities of a constantly evolving legal landscape and balancing multiple responsibilities in a limited period. To overcome these challenges, I focused on professional development and prioritised effective time management, detecting priority, and communication skills. This made me, a reliable and knowledgeable resource within the organisation and demonstrated my commitment to the success of the company.
