Spotlight on: Sky’s Legal Team 

In Spring 2023, Sky’s Legal Team, under the visionary leadership of Group General Counsel Niamh Grogan, embarked on the largest transformation in its history. The newly launched Vision, Structure, and Strategy have reshaped the legal function, ensuring Sky Legal is more aligned, connected, and impactful across all markets, including the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, and Italy. 

Central to this transformation is the concept of “One Team.” The initiative fosters inclusivity, ensuring every team member, regardless of location or language, has equal opportunities to thrive. A new structure featuring Centres of Excellence and Group functions was introduced to reduce complexity and create a more unified and agile team, driving efficiency and collaboration across all Sky markets. 

The focus on business partnering has empowered Sky Legal to become more integrated with the wider Sky business, delivering early, risk-based advice that aligns with Sky’s priorities. This deeper connection enables the legal team to play a more influential role in decision-making and strategic direction. 

The transformation extends beyond operational improvements, with a commitment to professional development and wellbeing. The new Learning & Development Programme empowers team members to take control of their career growth, offering training in technical legal skills, core competencies, and career development. Niamh’s focus on improving work-life balance and streamlining processes through initiatives like the “Stop & Simplify” project has resulted in increased efficiency and wellbeing for the team. 

Sky Legal’s Outside Counsel Management Programme strategically revamped its law firm engagement, implementing cost-saving measures while maintaining high-quality legal services. These efforts have not only delivered significant cost savings but also reinforced Sky Legal’s position as a forward-thinking, agile team ready to meet the challenges of the future. Sky Legal is now better positioned than ever to support Sky’s business and deliver on its ambitious goals.
