It was Ethan Orlinsky’s passion for baseball that led him down the path of patents and trademark law. Prior to taking on the hard-won position at his dream organization, he’d primarily practiced within corporate and M&A. Orlinsky himself has admitted that he was not the most suitable candidate for the role, at least not on paper. It was a strong work ethic, determination, and enthusiasm for the sport that carried him through, and these days he is a highly respected practitioner at the top of his game. He was promoted to general counsel in 1997, and over time his role has evolved well beyond the scope of pure legal to trusted adviser to the business. Recent high-profile work includes leading a crackdown on counterfeit sales of merchandise and tickets during the World Series, which involved sending his licensing staff out on the streets to work undercover with local authorities.
