D. Cameron Findlay
Senior vice president, general counsel and secretary | Archer Daniels Midland
In his role as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary at Fortune 50 company Archer Daniels Midland, D. Cameron Findlay oversees the global legal, compliance, regulatory, government relations and insurance functions for the global food processing and commodities trading corporation. He played a pivotal role in restructuring the ADM legal department when joined the company in 2013, as he explains: ‘When I arrived here, the legal department functioned like a small-town law firm, with an attorney handling litigation one day, an asset purchase the next, and an FCPA investigation the next. I have tried to put in place a structure where functional experts handle areas like litigation, employment law, M&A, and securities law, while business and geography lawyers stay close to their businesses. While a matrix structure like this has posed challenges, the businesses have been quite happy about the increase in the quality and responsiveness of the legal department’. Since then, Findlay has contributed heavily towards ADM’s prolific streak of international company acquisitions and joint venture agreements in recent years. Prior to joining ADM, Findlay spent four years as general counsel of Medtronic, where he assisted the world’s largest stand-alone medical device company with government and plaintiff safety and marketing issues surrounding its bone growth product Infuse, amongst other significant achievements. Before this, Findlay was general counsel of Aon, guiding the world’s largest insurance brokerage on a significant investigation by the attorney general of New York during his six years there. Findlay is also distinguished for having served in the Administrations of both George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, as deputy assistant to the president in the chief of staff’s office and deputy secretary of labour respectively.
