‘David Sorkin, general counsel of KKR and a member of the executive committee, is among the most influential figures in the private equity industry. KKR has relied on Sorkin for his legal advice for approximately 25 years including when he was an M&A partner at Simpson Thacher, and later when he became KKR’s first general counsel in 2007. He also played a leading role in KKR’s IPO in 2010, after which his responsibilities grew to encompass public company issues. Sorkin has been the principal architect of the legal aspects of KKR’s transformation from a private equity firm to a public entity in the asset management business. He manages a global team comprised of approximately 40 direct reports across all of the company’s platforms including private equity, real estate, energy, capital markets, credit and financing. As part of the firm’s private equity business, Sorkin provides leadership to the general counsel of firms in which KKR funds invest. He was an early adopter of having annual conferences of general counsel of these portfolio companies where they could discuss current legal issues and best practices. General counsels of other private equity firms regularly solicit his opinion on the significance of key developments in the space. He is known for his intelligence and judgment. Sorkin is a graduate of Williams College and Harvard Law School and is a frequent speaker at seminars dealing with private equity and mergers and acquisitions, including conferences sponsored by the International Bar Association and American Bar Association. He is also an engaged member of the New York community [and] is a member of the board of directors of New Alternatives for Children, Inc. For all of the reasons stated above, I strongly support Sorkin’s nomination for the GC Powerlist’.
