The Latin American and Iberia in-house legal team at BlackRock, one of the world’s largest investment firms, is well regarded for its high level of due diligence and attention to detail on terms client interaction and legal supervision. Joe Hill managing director, head of legal and compliance of Latin America and Iberia, leads the team of six lawyers from New York that sit in Madrid and across Latin America covering both regions as one large coverage area. The team handles the legal matters related to BlackRock’s mutual funds, exchange traded funds, model portfolios, alternative investments, and managed accounts. The team is proactive in its engagement with clients and other business areas of the firm going beyond a purely compliance function. It was highly involved in the company becoming a regulated entity in Mexico, the continuing application of the Alladin compliance regulations and earning the company new clients and business. The team was instrumental in the September 2018, acquisition of Citibanamex’s asset management business, with over US$34bn in investments.
