With numerous lawyers in its Mexico and Argentinian hubs along with many more throughout the region, the operations of HSBC Securities’ Latin American in-house legal team are many and varied. Led by senior vice president and general counsel for the Americas Mark Steffensen, the team is tasked with supporting an extensive portfolio of financial products to large institutional clients throughout the region. Much of the team’s work is heavily cross-border in nature, including securities deals, M&A advisory work, equity and debt securities, essentially overseeing the smooth running of all investment banking services at the bank. The New York headquartered team’s Latin American successes have been notable in recent years. Among others, a complex notes offering for Banco de Bogota in Colombia in 2017 was a particularly rewarding project, requiring the balancing of legal risks with local federal regulations and the need to undertake securities exchanges as part of a novel and innovative case which was a first for the jurisdiction.
