The in-house legal team at Johnson Controls oversees the legal activities of 100 subsidiaries that span 21 countries and territories across six business lines in Latin America and the Caribbean, a large responsibility which necessitates excellent technical skills and thorough organisation from the department. Made up of 22 members, the legal team is led by vice president and regional general counsel for Latin America, Gonzalo Garcia Lussardi, a highly respected US-based counsel with an in-depth knowledge of the region and its various legal nuances and extensive experience of managing senior teams in the Latin American market. The legal department has been tasked with establishing the legal and regulatory best practices region-wide. Some of their other areas of focus include negotiating commercial contracts, working on establishing joint ventures, litigation management and compliance matters. The legal team collaborates and liaises with various business units, in order to conduct and discuss investigations across the region. Amongst their notable transactions, the legal team have worked on implementing the company’s landmark global merger with Tyco in 2016, worth US$16.5bn.
