Medtronic is a global giant of the medical technology industry with a yearly turnover of around US$30bn and operating in 150 countries. It develops and supplies some world leading technology in the fields of cardiac and vascular medicine, minimally invasive therapies, restorative therapies, and diabetes with over 46,000 patents. The company has a major presence in Latin America with dedicated in-house legal teams situated across the region and a dedicated US-based legal team looking after the region as a whole. This team is led by Rodrigo Medina, senior legal and compliance director for Latin America, and consists of 17 lawyers, five compliance professionals and three support staff. The team operates with a regional mind-set versus a country-by-country outlook, focusing on the development of the business across the region. It is a high growth generator for the company and an important part of the company’s portfolio, despite having a high risk from a legal and compliance perspective. In the last year, the team has worked on elements of the purchase and integration of Covidien, a US$42bn acquisition with 40,000 employees globally. It has also worked on the divestiture of Medtronic’s patient recovery business to Cardinal Health, a US$4.5bn sale globally, and provided support to the development and deployment of new and disruptive business models within the integrated health solutions business unit and the value-based healthcare concept in the region. Driven by the “Medtronic Mission” and focused on patients, applying the highest ethical standards and a shared sense of values, the expert in-house Latin American legal team is well respected in the industry. Medina describes the team as highly ‘talented, diverse in all aspects with the highest internal percentage of women in leadership positions and highly engaged’.
