What are the most significant cases or transactions that your legal team has recently been involved in?

Being a gaming and hospitality operator in Vietnam, we are involved, on daily basis, in casino compliance matters, hospitality, development and real estate legal issues to develop the Ho Tram project in accordance with its Investment Registration Certificate.

Could you share an example of a time when you came up with an innovation that improved how your legal team works and did not come at a large expense?

Considering that Vietnam is still an emerging jurisdiction when it comes to gaming and casinos, we focus on implementing international standards in our daily operations, which helps to raise the standard of compliance and brings Vietnam – as a result of our self-regulating approach – in line with the international standards of gaming business operations.

How do you see the general counsel role evolving in Vietnam over the next five-ten years?

The most difficult hurdle we need to overcome is the lack of clarity. There are many grey areas and government discretion when it comes to interpreting and enforcing the law. Therefore, as a civil law jurisdiction, Vietnam needs to rely more on or proper legal drafting, codification, and certainty in legal interpretation.

What are some of the main trends impacting your industry in Vietnam?

As an emerging gaming jurisdiction, the main industry trend is to be able to advocate for the concept of integrated resorts with a gaming component and their contribution to the development of economy, tourism, and social cohesion. By implementing responsible gaming policy, we are uniquely positioned to assist a harmonious development of the industry and provide an important return to the communities by increasing employment, social benefits, and local and regional economic development.
