Despite its growing corporate offering, Damma Legal Advisors probably remains best known for its prowess in the tax sector where it advises businesses and high-net-worth individuals on M&A-related tax matters, tax consultancy, auditing and restructuring, as well as on contentious issues. The practice group – jointly led by Iván Chu, Rocio Liu and Walther Belaunde – is well versed in procedures brought by the Peruvian Tax Authority and has particular experience in the energy and mining sectors. Chu is a key contact for international tax issues and corporate tax structures; Liu is well versed in advisory matters and administrative and judicial tax litigation; and Belaunde deals with corporate structuring, reorganisations, business transfers and labour-related tax issues. Associate Mauricio Dulanto is another key member of the team and is recommended for compliance and audits. Former practice co-head José Chiarella left the firm in March 2023, since when the firm has further broadened its offering via the absorption of Sumara Hub Legal, bringing additional strength in financial regulatory matters, capital markets and legal innovation; the combination came into effect as of September 2023.
