Lawyers

Hall of Fame
The lawyers at the very top of the profession, widely known and respected by peers and clients for their longstanding involvement in market-leading work.
Hall of fameAverta Employment Lawyers LLP
Alan is a partner in Averta Employment Lawyers, having joined in January 2005. He was previously a partner at DLA Piper between 1983 and 2004 where he was a member of the Birmingham office management committee and head of the employment team in Birmingham. Clients for which he had responsibility operated in the financial services sector, retail, banking and recruitment. Work types included enforcement and/or drafting restrictive covenants, contractual disputes, dismissals and discrimination. For many years he undertook advocacy at various employment tribunals throughout the country on behalf of a variety of client companies. Setting up Averta Employment Lawyers with David Sykes in 2005, Alan has used the skills, expertise and reputation for the benefit of individual clients, such as directors, senior executives, managers and professionals from businesses of all shapes and sizes. In the last eight years he has acted for hundreds of clients dealing with a variety of issues such as discrimination, whistleblowing, share issues, bonus claims and severance payments. He has acted for PLC main board directors, including some from banks and financial institutions and for several ‘partners’ leaving private equity funds (which gives rise to interesting ‘carried interest’ issues). Clients consider him to be approachable and, importantly, other lawyers in commercial law firms consider him to be a capable, practical and commercial employment lawyer. Much of Averta’s work comes by way of referral from other lawyers. Alan is particularly sensitive to the public relations side of employment issues in that an individual’s reputation (both internally and in media terms) can be very important. This can be particularly relevant in public sector terminations but is a significant issue to many senior executives in large companies.

Averta Employment Lawyers LLP
David was formerly a partner with DLA Piper, advising such corporations as Tesco, HMV and Abbey National (now Santander) on a range of employment matters including hiring and firing senior executives and directors. In 2004 he set up Averta, a niche practice specialising exclusively in employment law. At Averta, David brings his legal and commercial skills to the benefit of directors, senior executives, managers and other professionals facing employment law issues at work or looking to negotiate an acceptable severance package. The firm became Averta Employment Lawyers when Alan Jones joined on 1 January 2005. Averta prides itself on its responsiveness, cost effective and outcome based approach to employment law issues. The firm will litigate where necessary but will endeavour to achieve an outstanding outcome for a client by negotiation or mediation wherever possible.Although the firm has remained true to its roots in bringing strong commercial skills to the benefit of the individual, there are a number of corporations that seek the partner-led and cost-effective support that the partners and senior lawyers in the firm can bring to a problem, and the firm welcomes approaches from businesses in need of strategic advice on employment matters. The type of work that David handles includes high-value severance claims, share and share options issues, bonus claims, team moves including restrictive covenants, board room disputes including shareholder issues, TUPE and discrimination. He has considerable experience acting for solicitors, accountants and other professionals in issues relating to membership of LLPs, and also handles senior individuals who work in the public sector including the NHS and local government.
