Anne-Marie Bohan

Anne-Marie Bohan has over 20 years' experience in technology related legal matters, and is Head of Matheson's Technology and Innovation Group and a member of our Asset Management and Investment Funds Group. Anne-Marie brings together significant practical experience in advising on technology and privacy legal issues with industry knowledge and an understanding of applicable regulatory rules and regulatory requirements.  She advises on all aspects of technology and e-commerce law, as well as outsourcings and contracted services, with particular focus on the requirements of financial institutions and financial services providers in these areas. Anne-Marie has extensive experience in drafting and negotiating contracts for the development, sale, purchase and licensing of hardware, software and IT systems for both suppliers and users of IT within the financial services industry and across a broad range of other industries.  She has also acted in some of the largest value and most complex IT and telecommunications systems and services outsourcing contracts, including advising on a number of the largest and highest value financial services outsourcings in Ireland. Anne-Marie's practice includes advising a broad range of clients on data protection, privacy issues and cybersecurity issues, including employee data protection issues, data subject access requests and security breach incidents.

Paul Lavery

Paul is the head of the firm’s Technology and Innovation Group and advises on a wide range of information technology, data protection, intellectual property, confidentiality and freedom of information issues. He advises on the supply and implementation of new IT systems, the licensing of software and the ownership, exploitation and licensing of intellectual property rights. Paul drafts and negotiates cutting-edge technology supply and implementation agreements and IT outsourcing agreements with a key focus on mobilisation, business transformation and key performance elements as well as exit management. Paul is a leading  expert on data protection and advises a large number of private sector entities and public bodies on their data protection obligations under existing and prospective  data protection law, including advising on subject access requests, data security incidents, marketing obligations and consents, record retention matters, data protection notices, policies and privacy statements, data controller and data processor registrations as well as solutions to facilitate the transfer of data outside the EEA. Paul is heavily involved in advising a number of private sector and public sector clients on their prospective obligations under the EU General Data Protection Regulation, including carrying out data protection assessments and audits and completing data inventories in order to advise clients on what changes to processing activities, data protection notices and agreements etc to ensure compliance with GDPR. Paul regularly advises on the legal implications of transacting on-line and related consumer protection issues. Paul also advises a number of international clients on their distribution, franchise and sales agency arrangements. In the area of freedom of information, Paul regularly acts for public bodies and private entities. He advises public bodies in respect of their compliance obligations in connection with the Freedom of Information Acts in dealing with access requests, advising on applicable exemptions and dealing with appeals to the Information Commissioner. Paul also advises public bodies and private entities on the application and scope of the Access to Information on the Environment Regulations. As a leading expert on the law of confidentiality, Paul regularly advises clients on confidentiality obligations and the drafting of appropriate confidentiality agreements and secrecy protocols. Paul is the author of Commercial Secrets: The Action for Breach of Confidence in Ireland (Round Hall/ Sweet & Maxwell, 1996), the first and only Irish work on the topic. The book has been quoted in judgments in the Irish Supreme Court.

Adam Finlay

Adam is a partner in the firm’s Technology & Innovation Group and advises on a wide range of information technology, intellectual property, data protection, freedom of information, confidentiality and sports law issues. He has particular expertise in relation to the protection and commercialisation of intellectual property, including drafting and negotiating assignment, licensing, collaboration, technology transfer, franchising, distribution, agency, sponsorship and naming rights agreements and advising on brand protection strategy, advertising and product placement. He is also a registered trade mark agent. On the technology side, Adam drafts and negotiates software licences, services agreements and outsourcing agreements and advises on legal issues in connection with transacting online and dealing with consumers. In the area of rights and obligations in relation to information, he regularly advises clients in the public and private sectors on data protection, freedom of information, access to information on the environment, open data and confidentiality matters.

Leo Moore

Leo is a Partner in the William Fry Technology Group, specialising in information technology (including e-commerce), data protection, intellectual property and commercial law. As part of his practice Leo advises on IT and business process outsourcing, software licensing and development, Internet of Things, apps and smart technology, e-commerce, cloud computing, systems integration, FinTech, strategic legal due diligence and on sports related matters. A regular contributor of articles to publications, Leo has also participated in lecture programmes on data protection, commercial law and intellectual property. He is a lecturer on the Law Society’s Diploma Programme and its Professional Practice.

John O'Connor

John is a Partner in William Fry’s Technology Group, the most experienced technology law team in the Irish market. He specialises in complex and large scale technology and outsourcing transactions including systems integration and implementation arrangements, licensing, IT and business process outsourcings and cloud services. John is also a specialist in the area of privacy, data protection and cyber security law and advises on general compliance, data transfers, hosting, issue management and best practice. He has gained particular experience of advising technology, life sciences and financial services organisations on major outsourcings and on ‘big data’ projects including the procurement and deployment of FinTech. 

Colin Rooney

Colin is a Partner in the Technology and Innovation Group. He advises on data protection and privacy, information technology, outsourcing, cloud computing, and e-business matters. Colin has extensive experience advising domestic and international clients on information management issues, with his data protection and information technology practice covering all aspects of data processing across all industry sectors. His practice also has a strong emphasis on commercial IT agreements. Colin is a frequent speaker on data protection and freedom of information topics, including at the Data Protection Leadership Forum, which the Group launched in 2019. He is also a frequent contributor to various legal journals on the above-mentioned topics.

John Whelan

John Whelan is a partner and Head of A&L Goodbody's Commercial & Technology group. John advises clients on contentious and regulatory matters and investigations with a focus within the technology and pharma sectors, and specifically on privacy, IP (patents), and telecoms regulation. He has been involved in many of the most significant litigation cases in these areas that have come before the Irish courts over the last 20 years. Before joining A&L Goodbody as a partner, John worked with Freshfields in London and Hong Kong. He previously headed up A&L Goodbody’s US offices in San Francisco and Palo Alto.
