Position

Ümit Hergüner is the senior partner for Hergüner Bilgen Üçer, which he founded in 1989. The Hergüner firm is among the leading law firms in Turkey, and is a full service independent law firm representing a major international and national clientele, including international and multilateral financial institutions, global corporations, agencies and other notable clients.

Mr. Hergüner is the head of the transactional practice group, which is a renowned global, cross-border mergers and acquisitions practice that cuts across a broad range of industries. Mr. Hergüner also provides expertise in project finance, international finance and banking, foreign, and strategic investments to clients including International Finance Institutions. Mr. Hergüner provides expert advice on foreign and strategic deals as well as legal advice regarding corporate governance, public policy, rule of law and related government affairs issues.

Career

Prior to founding the firm in 1989, Mr. Hergüner was Special Counsel on Foreign Law at Reid & Priest Attorneys at Law in New York from 1985 to 1988 .

Memberships

Mr. Herguner holds and has held public policy and advisory roles, including having served as President of ILI-Istanbul (International Law Institute) and Board Member of the International Law Institute, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C.  Mr. Hergüner formerly served as President, and is currently an active member, of the Corporate Governance Association of Turkey (TKYD). He has also served on the TKYD Advisory Board, has been a member of the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD), and a member of the Board of Directors Association (YÜD) and has served in many other similar roles. He is also a member of the American Bar Association (ABA), the World Law Group (WLG), the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB), the AVERE Electro Mobility Association, the Turkish Association for Energy Economics (TRAEE), and is an advisory member of the Boğaziçi University Corporate Governance Center.

Education

Mr. Hergüner received his Bachelor of Laws from Istanbul University School of Law in 1979, where he also conducted Graduate Legal Studies (DEA) until 1982, as well as receiving a Master of Laws from American University Washington College of Law in 1984, and a Master of Laws from the University of Virginia Law School in1985.
