The firm: Arnason Faktor was formed in 2006 when two leading intellectual property firms in Iceland, A&P Arnason and Faktor Patentbureau, merged. Faktor Patenbureau was founded in 1969 and was extensively engaged in intellectual property protection in Iceland. A&P Arnason traces its roots back to 1985 and was a pioneer in the promotion of intellectual property protection in the Icelandic industry and business community. Arnason Faktor is the largest and most specialised intellectual property consultancy firm in Iceland with 27 employees today. The firm has a strong client base both in Iceland and internationally that are represented by the highly qualified professional team. The firm has offices in Reykjavik and Munich.

The firm prides itself on working for the local industry in all fields. The firm emphasises supporting the start-up community, but at the same time, being able to help companies take off to the international venue. Its partners administer and lecture in the field of IP at the national universities along with taking pride in educating the market in general in the field of IP.

Areas of practice: The firm’s main area of practice is within the field of intellectual property with five partners. The firm offers extensive services within the whole spectrum of IP, ie litigation and licensing, copyright, patent drafting and prosecution, trade marks, portfolio management, searches and clearance, opinion work and due diligence to name a few.

The firm assists clients with enforcement matters, strategies and preparation for litigation, as well as bringing IP cases through the litigation process. Asdis Magnusdottir, one of the firm’s partners, is a litigator who has worked within the field of IP for over 20 years.

In the field of patents, the firm includes five European patent attorneys of which four are partners in the firm, Gunnar Orn Hardarson (managing partner), Einar Karl Fridriksson, Sigurdur Ingvarsson and Thorlakur Jonsson, all with experience in the field of IP for over 20 years. In the field of patents the firm is highly experienced in both pre- and post-grant services as well as any analysis and advice work in the field.

The trade mark department covers any kind of work in relation to trade marks and domain names ranging from searching and registration to renewals and dispute work both nationally and internationally. The firm also specialises in the protection and registration of industrial designs nationally and internationally. Copyright work, in any shape or form, is important in the firm in addition to IP due diligence work for all purposes. IP transaction work of all kinds is a speciality including licensing.
