Career

Jan is a registered arbitrator with the China International Economic Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (SHIAC). He founded the Agricultural Law Section of the International Bar Association in 2015, presided it for many years and is currently a member of its Advisory Board. Jan has been involved in many politically sensitive China-related international transactions and disputes acting for Western and Chinese clients. Jan is a member of the Board of Trustees of the world's oldest agricultural research institute Rothamsted Research in the UK. Jan is mainly based in Beijing.

Jan holds various positions at multinational companies operating in China and Europe and is often involved in legal strategy decision-making processes of international clients.

Jan Holthuis is the founder of the former HIL International Lawyers & Advisers, an international niche law firm with a specialization in Chinese law and practice. HIL, active in China since 1995, with offices in Amsterdam, Shanghai and Beijing, was the first Dutch firm to be granted a license from the Chinese Ministry of Justice to operate a foreign law firm branch in China in 2004. In 2016 HIL merged with Buren and Jan joined BUREN as a partner.

Position

Jan Holthuis, partner and lawyer at BUREN, is an experienced advisor in China related cross-border mergers and acquisitions and corporate restructuring, international technology transfers, product liability insurance claims and international arbitration. Jan is active in the China legal practice since 1995 and predominantly living and working in China since 2009.

Education

Jan graduated in 1992 from Erasmus University Rotterdam in Dutch law. In 2003, Jan (re) qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales. In 2009 he successfully completed the Grotius specialist course International M&A transactions.
