Recognised as a leading lawyer in the United Kingdom competition litigation market, Paul Chaplin played a leading role in the award winning National Grid claim which is undoubtedly the most important and high profile competition litigation case of the last five years. He is a counsel in the London office practising competition litigation. He has extensive experience of antitrust/competition litigation claims, with a particular focus on claims for damages and injunctive relief before the English High Court arising out of anti-competitive conduct. Paul continues to act on cases that are at the forefront of developments in the burgeoning field of competition damages claims, including two of the most significant UK competition litigation cases of the last 10 years; the National Grid (Gas Insulated Switchgear) and Air Cargo damages claims.
Paul is also centrally involved in the Air Cargo litigation claims brought across the European Union, including acting for Korean Air before the English High Court in one of the biggest and highest value cartel damages claim to be brought in Europe. His recent work also includes defending a number of high value damages claims in relation to the power transformer, power cables and CRT Glass markets. Since joining Hogan Lovells in 2002, Paul's career has given him regular experience of large group actions, multi-party lead case litigation, and the use of technology in large scale litigation.
Paul's cases are regularly shortlisted for awards, including: The Lawyer's Top 20 cases for 2014; Global Competition Review Matter of the Year 2015; and Global Competition Review Litigation of the Year 2013, 2015 and 2018.
Paul writes regularly in legal and competition journals (including writing GCR's UK Private Enforcement Knowhow publication) and often participates in conferences/seminars concerning competition litigation. He is recognised as being an integral part of Hogan Lovells' excellent Tier 1 competition litigation practice and was listed in Legal 500 2018 as a Next Generation Lawyer and was recently described by Legal500 as "Superb" "intellectually tough" and "a highly recommended counsel".
