Career

Jonathan S. Jeffress defends individuals and businesses in matters involving fraud, false statements, bribery, public corruption, and other criminal and civil matters. A trial lawyer by training, Jon spent 12 years as an Assistant Federal Public Defender for the District of Columbia. He is experienced in defending clients accused of serious crimes in federal and state courts around the country, and in developing sophisticated legal strategies to protect the best interests of his clients.

Jon has represented clients in all phases of federal criminal cases and has won acquittals in over half a dozen jury trials in federal court. He has also successfully argued numerous appeals in the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and prevailed in numerous post-conviction proceedings. Jon lectures regularly on law enforcement sting operations to Federal Defender Offices across the country and to members of the Criminal Justice Act Panels. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Law Students in Court (LSIC), a nonprofit corporation that assists over 6,000 litigants in the D.C. Courts every year.  Jon previously served as a Screening Committee Member for President Barack Obama’s Clemency Project, reviewing and making recommendations for executive clemency in the wake of significant changes in federal sentencing law.

Prior to joining the Federal Public Defender’s office, Jon was an associate at Williams & Connolly. During his time as an associate, he worked on criminal and civil matters in federal and state courts, including the defense of a high-profile client in an accounting fraud prosecution and another in a grand jury investigation regarding a Presidential pardon.
