Position

Matthew is a Partner and leads Tyr's Employment team. Matthew has over 20 years’ experience as a specialist employment solicitor advising a wide range of companies, in various sectors and jurisdictions, from PLCs to SMEs as well as senior individuals. Matthew’s particularly noteable experience includes:

Acting for ICI in the reported case of Hagen & 440 others v ICI & others. Acting for various national hauliers and logistics businesses in defending all types of tribunal claims and advising on TUPE and other employment issues. Advising on a worldwide restrictive covenant for a well-known entertainer. Advising on potential industrial action which could have resulted in a national fuel strike.

Matthew has substantial experience in all aspects of employment law and provides solutions and advice on a range of employment matters, including business restructuring, TUPE and collective consultation, restrictive covenants, managing trade union relations, business acquisitions and disposals, defending all types of Employment Tribunal claims and advising on executive severance (for both companies and individuals).

Matthew conducts his own advocacy before the Employment Tribunal and is an experienced training presenter.

Career

Matthew joined Tyr in April 2020. Matthew had previously been a partner at several commercial firms. He has managed and overseen the growth of various teams in Leeds, Manchester and the North East, particularly during his time at DWF.

Memberships

Matthew is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. Matthew is also a founding director of Driver First Assist (“DFA”) which is a national road safety initiative capable of significantly reducing the number of deaths on UK roads. DFA is a not-for-profit organisation created with the support of the emergency services and the Department for Transport.
