About

Welcome to Barratts Solicitors – here is some information about us.

We are a leading and specialist law firm that only acts for individuals who have experienced a physical and/or psychological injury because of a Personal Injury (e.g. accident at work, road accident, criminal assault, product defect etc.) or Clinical Negligence (e.g. where things go wrong because of decisions by medical practitioners in the NHS, GP surgeries or private practice).  We also represent bereaved families where loved ones have died because of the actions of others.  Our Court of Protection team continue to act for our injured clients who lack the capacity to manage their financial affairs / damages award.

Our ethos puts the injured client and their immediate family at the heart of everything we do.  Our focus is on providing advice of the highest quality to our clients.

The firm

We handle all types of severe injury claims.  We have particular expertise in brain and spinal injuries, multiple trauma injuries, birth injury claims (including cerebral palsy), misdiagnosis claims, limb amputation and criminal assault claims.

Our office is in Nottingham but we embrace flexible working for our staff and we represent clients all over the country and abroad.  Barratts Solicitors was established in 1991 and was ranked by The Legal 500 in our first year as a new firm.  Since then, we have been consistently ranked in tier 1 by Legal 500.

We pride ourselves on being different to the bigger firms who operate in the serious injury market.  We are a small, cohesive and experienced team of lawyers and support staff who provide a highly personal service to our clients.  You will work with a senior / experienced lawyer for the duration of your claim.  We guarantee all cases are handled personally and sensitively with dedicated one-to-one advice.

We only do case work involving people who have been injured.  We purposely keep the caseloads of our lawyers low to ensure they can devote the necessary time to every client's case.  We act against major insurance companies, the NHS and the private healthcare sector.  Barratts Solicitors are known for fighting for our clients to achieve the best results possible; we often take on cases and succeed where other law firms have failed.   The firm and all our lawyers are well connected with, and respected by, many other professionals who are an integral part of the support network / team that an injured client needs to work with to get their life back on track.  We also guide and support bereaved families through the inquest process and any future claim.

Our depth of experience is consistently recognised by the independent legal guides; the majority of our clients are personal referrals which is testament to the quality of service and advice that we provide.  Many of our lawyers are accredited specialists, panel members or are recognised as experts in their field.  We also have links with many of the Charities (local and National) that help injured people: Headway (the Brain Injury Association), AvMA (Action against Medical Accidents), APIL (Association of Personal injury Lawyers), Footprints (conductive education for children living with mobility and communication problems) and the SIA (Spinal Injuries Association) to mention a few.

Types of work undertaken

The firm acts in all complex injury cases, especially those involving brain or spinal injury.  All our lawyers understand the issues surrounding acquired or traumatic brain injury (whether at birth or later on in life), the needs of clients with various degrees of paralysis in spinal injury cases, and the complexity of clients who find themselves having to live with life changing injuries.

Compassion, empathy and a willingness to listen define how we work with clients.  Your individual needs - accommodation, therapy, technology, equipment - are thought through to ensure the right level of compensation is awarded for your injury / change in circumstances.

Rehabilitation is always a focus for us and we secure this by working to obtain early admissions of liability and interim payments on account of damages.

The Clinical Negligence team has a proven record securing awards for birth injury compensation, including cerebral palsy claims - every birth injury case where we have issued court proceedings has resulted in an award of compensation.  We also represent patients who have experienced a delayed / missed diagnosis (e.g. cancer, DVT, pulmonary embolism); head injury (acquired brain injury and stroke misdiagnosis); spinal injury (such as cauda equina syndrome or spinal abscess); medical practitioner negligence (GP failings, A&E or ambulance delays, and failure to diagnoses infections / sepsis); illness and disease claims (such as sepsis, encephalitis and limb ischaemia resulting in amputation); orthopaedic claims (hip dysplasia, joint replacement); surgical mismanagement claims; fatal accidents and inquests.

The Personal Injury team have a proven track record in representing clients injured at work or in an RTA who suffer a traumatic / acquired brain, head and/or spinal injury (along with associated cardiovascular issues, respiratory issues, pressure ulcers, blood clots, urinary and bowel complications, bone fractures, chronic pain etc. that many TBI / spinal injury patients experience); spinal injury claims involving tetraplegia; Criminal Injury Compensation Authority (CICA) claims; Motor Insurer Bureau (MIB) claims; Industrial disease claims;  cross border litigation claims; and fatal claims (including representing bereaved families at inquest).

The Court of Protection team act as court appointed deputies (personal appointments, not a trust corporation appointment) helping our severely disabled clients during and after litigation concludes.  The work is an important continuation of the service we offer to our injured clients who lack the capacity to manage their own affairs.
