Career

Javier Robalino Orellana is a partner of ROBALINO Abogados and leads the Arbitration practice. He has been recognized as the only Eminent Practitioner in the Corporate area in Ecuador by the renowned Chambers magazine. In 2020, he became a member of the Circle of Presidents of the Council of the Americas.

In 2011, Javier started an independent practice that continues to the present under his name and leadership. For more than two decades, he has represented multinationals in various local and international commercial and investment disputes.

Javier has participated in various cases under the ICSID, UNCITRAL, CIAC (International Commission on Commercial Arbitration), ICC and CAM-Santiago regulations, among others, and in cases of International Public Law under the rules of the WTO, the Andean Community (CAN) and the Inter-American Convention on Human Rights.

In the academic field, Javier Robalino Orellana is a professor of Administrative Law at the Institute of Law and Business INIDEM- Business & Law School of Central America (since 2011) and of Administrative Law at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) (1999), where he was Director of the Graduate Program (2003-2018). He has been president of the Government Relations Committee of ALArb, Director of the Ibero-American Forum of Administrative Law (2007-2013), representative of the CEA Spanish Arbitration Club and Director of the Chamber of Industries (2003-2005). He is frequently involved in various academic activities with a variety of international organizations and universities such as the IBA, IFA, AIPN, Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, Council of the Americas, and ABA.

Javier has been appointed arbitrator by the ICC, UNCITRAL, ICDR, PCA, CIAC, the Chamber of Commerce of Bogota, the Chamber of Commerce of Quito, CAM Santiago and the International Center for Arbitration and Mediation. He has also acted as an expert witness in matters of Public Law under ICC and UNCITRAL regulations.

Likewise, Javier has been a visiting professor of the Arbitration Program at the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy (FIAA) (Bogotá, 2018), of postgraduate courses in Arbitration of the ALArb- Chamber of Commerce of Bogota (since 2013), Energy and Investment programs at the Carlos III University of Madrid (since 2006) and Administrative Law at the Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil (2007-2013).

Previously, Javier was a foreign associate at King & Spalding LLP in Houston, Texas (2006-2007); Professor of Administrative Law at the Catholic University of Quito (September 1996-2002), member of the Regulatory Commission of the Presidency of the Republic of Ecuador (2002-2003), Director of the Legal Division of Arthur Andersen LLP in Ecuador ( 1996-1998), Manager of the Office of the President of the Supreme Court and coordinator of the Judicial Reform Project (1995-1996);
