In 2020, we publicized our Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Policy (DE&I) Policy, and our DE&I Task Force, which includes firm leaders and dedicated staff member diverse in age, seniority, gender, and sexual orientation, has been actively promoting DEI. Here are the highlights of our achievements in 2024:
- We conducted our second firm-wide survey on unconscious bias, receiving over 220 responses, which represents about 20% of the target group.
- We provided original unconscious bias training sessions for our management members and senior associates.
- We launched new member resource groups focusing on disabilities, caregiving, and parenting.
- We hired a job coach to assist members with disabilities in settling into the workplace and opened a massage room where any member can receive a massage from a blind health practitioner.
- We organized multiple “DE&I Meet-ups” for female lawyers, lateral hires, Chinese and Taiwanese lawyers, lawyers who primarily communicate in English (as opposed to Japanese), and lawyers with different academic backgrounds, providing opportunities for interaction.
- We celebrated our fourth annual Pride Month in June, aimed at raising awareness of LGBTQ+ issues. We also played a pivotal role in LLAN (http://llanjapan.org/en)’s projects to translate LGBTQ+-related court cases.
- We received the highest recognition, “Gold,” from the “PRIDE Index,” an initiative focusing on sexual minorities in the workplace in Japan (https://www.morihamada.com/en/notices/103786).
- Our childcare leave system was picked up as a model case in the Chambers DEI report (https://crm.chambers.com/dei-global-report-2024).
