We established and publicized our Diversity and Inclusion Policy in 2020 and our D&I Promotion Task Force, including two firm leaders and one dedicated staff member, diverse in age, seniority, gender and sexual orientation, has vigorously promoted DEI. Our achievements in 2023 include:
- Based on the results of internal surveys conducted in 2022, we ran a 75-minute unconscious bias training session.
- Our Bangkok office, CMHM, made a presentation under the theme of "Break the Bias" at the Thailand Arbitration Centre to mark International Women’s Rights day.
- We held multiple “D&I Meet ups” for female lawyers, lateral hires and Chinese and Taiwanese lawyers, providing opportunities to deepen exchanges and share their concerns.
- We created an online community of 110 Japan-based female lawyers to share a diverse range of information including female empowerment, internal career opportunities and informal advice for daily life issues.
- In June, we held our third annual Pride Month which seeks to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ and related rights and cultural issues, which included two lectures, one interactive workshop, distribution of promotional goods throughout the MHM group and to clients, office and reception area decorations, and setting up of an online community where members can freely discuss SOGI issues.
- We were awarded the highest recognition “Gold" of the “PRIDE Index,” an initiative focusing on sexual minorities in the workplace in Japan.
- We also amended our childcare leave system. The number of lawyers taking up the opportunities, (especially male lawyers) has increased significantly.
