Abraham Chan SC’s practice spans commercial, constitutional and administrative law litigation. He regularly advises and acts as advocate in a wide range of complex, high-impact disputes for individuals and institutions at all levels of court in Hong Kong. Much of Abraham’s advocacy in silk has been at the appellate level, where he is often brought on fresh to lead in appealing or defending earlier judgments. Alexander Stock SC advises and appears as advocate, principally in the area of commercial litigation and arbitration. Alex’s commercial practice includes arbitration, banking, company law, insurance, professional negligence (auditors, solicitors, banks, brokers), and sale of goods. He has substantial experience of international arbitration, and challenges to arbitration awards before the Hong Kong courts. His regulatory experience extends to advising investment banks and others in relation to the Securities and Futures Ordinance, appearing before the Market Misconduct Tribunal, and cases involving the regulation and discipline of certified public accountants. Anthony Chan SC has a broad civil litigation and advisory practice with an emphasis on public law and commercial law. Prior to his appointment as Senior Counsel on 20 May 2023, he was recognised by both Chambers and Partners and Legal 500 as a leading junior in his areas of expertise and was regarded as “probably one of the best junior counsel in town” and “on the up and up”. In his public law practice, Anthony has considerable experience in constitutional and administrative law litigations, civil liberty cases, town planning, judicial reviews generally and election petitions. Notable cases include acting for the Government in its successful defence of the constitutionality of the Small House Policy and the Co-location arrangement, and in advising the LegCo President on measures to resolve the filibustering of the election of the House Committee Chairman. He also advised and appeared for the LegCo President in the series of oath-taking cases and filibustering cases. Other highlights include representing the Bar in a case that confirms the distinction between counsel and solicitor advocates, and in successfully defending a constitutional challenge against the supplementary occupation rule. Anthony’s substantial commercial practice encompasses property disputes (compulsory sale, adverse possession and encroachment), shareholders’ disputes, insolvency matters and general contractual disputes. Anthony’s private client work include acting for family members and the committees in mental health and related proceedings (such as asset recovery and statutory will) and advising ultra-high net worth individuals on succession planning. Byron joined Chambers after completing his pupillage with Mr Bernard Man SC, Mr Derek Chan SC, Mr Laurence Li SC and Mr Keith Lam. He has a broad civil practice and accepts instructions in all areas of Chambers’ work. He is recognised as a “rising star” in the Commercial Disputes section in Legal 500 (2021) and cited as an “excellent counsel who gives clear and concise advice, and is familiar with a range of aspects of financial regulatory matters”. Charles practises in London from Brick Court Chambers, but since joining Temple Chambers on his call to the Hong Kong Bar in 2015, he splits his time between London and Hong Kong. He took the Bar exams and became Hong Kong qualified in order to spend more time as an advocate in the courts and arbitration in Hong Kong. Charles’ practice is predominantly in commercial litigation. He has been involved in many of the major litigations of the day in London and is an advocate who has a hands-on involvement as team leader in any litigation where he is involved. Charles’ recent work in Hong Kong includes a jurisdiction challenge in a professional negligence action against a US-based firm in China Medical Supplies v Paul Weiss, involvement in the first case before the new Competition Tribunal in Hong Kong Competition Commission v Nutanix, and Mayer BVI v Alliance Financial Intelligence where the Court of Appeal had to consider whether to follow recent English and Australian authority on setting aside judgments for fraud. Elsewhere he has been involved in an HKIAC arbitration involving marine transportation, litigation in Bermuda and the Bahamas, an action for 202,000 plaintiffs arising from the collapse of the Fundao dam in Brazil and a seminal case before the English Court of Appeal as to whether the contribution act had extra-territorial effect. As a qualified Mechanical and Electrical Engineer, Charles worked in the international development department of a multi-national blue chip industrial company for five years before qualifying as a lawyer and entering private practice. Charles’s work involves mainly international litigation, arbitration and mediation across a broad spectrum of commercial work. He acts as counsel in the High Courts of London and Hong Kong, in international and domestic arbitrations, acts as a mediator and conciliator in cross border disputes and regularly sits as a sole arbitrator or as part of a three man tribunal. Deepak is one of leading barristers specialising in matrimonial cases in Hong Kong and England. Richard’s practice covers a wide range of civil and commercial litigation which includes disputes relating to commercial agreements, company/shareholder, properties and trusts, banking, insurance policies, insolvency, defamation and professional negligence. The cases he has handled often involve the question of forum, conflict of laws and enforcement of both arbitral awards and court judgments. Apart from court proceedings, Mr Khaw appears regularly in international arbitrations (including LCIA arbitration proceedings in London) as counsel. Richard has sat as Deputy High Court Judge during various periods between 2018 and 2021. In 2021, he was appointed Recorder of the High Court. Tim’s practice spans constitutional and administrative law, public international law, civil and commercial disputes (before the courts and in arbitration), as well as competition and other regulatory matters. Tim is a Bar Scholar. Val has a broad civil and commercial practice and is experienced in advising listed companies, regulators, financial institutions, liquidators, directors and shareholders on a range of financial, securities, company, trust and regulatory matters. Val is also actively developing an arbitration practice. He regularly acts in international commercial arbitrations and has advised on various aspects concerning arbitration (including document disclosure, jurisdictional challenge and interim relief). In early 2020, he was appointed by The Court of Arbitration for Arts at The Hague as a member of its pool of arbitrators. Victor also has a substantial practice in high value trust disputes, most recently appearing in Herman Budihardjo v Di Gunawan and Yang Foo-oi v Wai-wai Chen. As part of his ADR practice, Victor appears regularly as counsel in arbitrations and related court applications, and sits as arbitrator in a wide range of commercial disputes.
