Rupert is a skilled transactional and commercial lawyer with over twenty-five years’ experience in the media and entertainment sectors. Although Rupert has a broad practice, he specialises in music publishing, recorded music, digital distribution, social media, brand marketing, merchandising, sponsorship and live sectors. He is well regarded for his depth of knowledge of international markets and legal frameworks.
Rupert is adept at working on both sides of the ‘creative coin,’ not only advising artists, producers, songwriters and other content creators, but also record labels and music publishers. He has expertise in advising transnational corporations in the US and other jurisdictions in general commercial work including company and catalogue disposals, acquisitions and joint ventures.
Rupert works in both private practice and in-house at a senior level. Previously Head of Legal and Business Affairs at a substantial international entertainment and logistics operation, he is currently Managing Director of Ultra Music Publishing Europe, a leading international music publisher of electronic and dance music and hip-hop, where he oversees the European operations of Ultra Music Publishing, working closely with the A&R team, as well as working across Ultra’s affiliated record labels, Helix Records and Payday Records.
Rupert joins Level from James Ware Stephenson where he was a consultant. He began his legal career at Media and Entertainment practice, Davenport Lyons. Previous to this, Rupert co-owned a London record store in the 1990’s, beginning a life-long passion for working closely with artists, entrepreneurs and those starting out in the music industry. A particular interest remains helping new artists and writers navigate the complexities of the industry.
Rupert has been a contributor to various legal and industry publications, attends many international seminars and events, lectures on industry topics and has featured on a variety of panels.
