Nicola Holmes

Nicola is a Legal Director in our Competition, EU and Trade group. She has over 19 years' experience in the competition field, with a broad based practice, covering investigations, behavioural work and merger control. She has significant expertise in dominant firm trading and pricing practices, where her experience includes: securing the first ever settlement agreement in a UK abuse of dominance investigation; advising on a UK abuse of dominance investigation in the water sector, involving allegations of predatory pricing and cross subsidy; and advising on the defence of a substantial standalone abuse of dominance claim brought in the High Court. She has advised clients in diverse sectors, including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, transport and pensions on pricing and distribution strategy for dominant or potentially dominant products. Her merger control experience includes: advising on the pre-notification strategy and early stages of a significant disposal in the UK dairy sector; and acting for a client in the towage sector, securing a second phase clearance decision with only minimal divestment for a merger leading to a 90% market share in the UK towage sector. Nicola spent time on secondment to the competition department of the Financial Conduct Authority, where she worked on one of the first competition market studies and assisted in preparations for concurrency. She also undertook a long secondment to a client in the automotive sector. She has delivered highly regarded competition compliance training programmes to numerous clients in sectors including chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food. She is recommended in the Legal 500 2019.
