Career

Mr. Espejo, an Electrical Mechanical Engineer from the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM) and a Law graduate from the Universidad del Valle de México (UVM), embarked on his journey in patent practice in 2005. Since then, he has excelled as a consultant specializing in the analysis, acquisition, and utilization of patents, particularly in mechanical, electrical, industrial designs, and computer-implemented inventions. Octavio has held pivotal roles, overseeing the management of operational and maintenance aspects within the firm.

His practice areas include Patent and Registration Proceedings in Mexico and Abroad, Technical Consultancy in Litigation, Technological Intelligence, Technology Transfer, Plant Varieties, and Industrial Secrets.

Currently, Mr. Espejo leads the Patents and Technology team, spearheading the filing, processing, and maintenance of patents, utility models, and industrial designs. He manages technological intelligence studies, intellectual asset valuation, technology assessment, and the technical aspects of patent litigation. Additionally, he heads the Technology Transfer Office and is responsible for the operation of the Guadalajara branch and the specialized Translation department.

As an active member of various associations, he has been President of the Patent Committee (2017-2018) and President of the Information and Communications Technologies Committee (2019-2020) at the Mexican Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AMPPI). He has represented Mexico in the Industrial Designs Committee since 2015 and the Digital Economy Committee since 2019 at the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). Furthermore, he has been a voting member of the Industrial Designs, Emerging Technologies, and Practice in Latin America Committee since 2016 at the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and a member of the Designs Committee at the International Trademark Association (INTA).

His contributions have earned him recognition, including being named a Mexican IP Star by Managing Intellectual Property since 2017 and WIPR Patent Leader since 2016.

Mr. Espejo influence extends beyond his professional roles, as he was invited by the Japanese Patent Office (JPO) to participate in the JPO/IPR Training Course for Practitioners Specializing in Patents (IPPP). Additionally, he has authored numerous articles for national and international publications, contributing to the book "Design Rights – Functionality and Scope of Protection" jointly published by AIPPI and Wolters Kluwer. Octavio has also been a speaker on Industrial Design protection in Mexico at various conferences, including the Pan-American YMC of LES in 2016 (Ottawa, CA), the AIPLA Mid-Winter Institute in 2017 (Ft Lauderdale, FL), and the AIPPI World Congresses in 2019 (Cancún) and 2023 (Istanbul).
