Career
Mr. Barrera specializes in domestic and transnational transactions in which he continually advises national clients involved in infrastructure and energy projects, consumer goods, healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, as well as venture capital, among others. Mr. Barrera has represented clients and representative transactions in the market such as advising Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Ontario Teachers Pension Plan in their acquisition of a 40% interest in Impulsora del Desarrollo y el Empleo en America Latina, S.A.B. de C.V. through a tender offer on the Mexican Stock Exchange (Bolsa Mexicana de Valores, S.A.B. de C.V.), the formation of the FIBRA-E of IDEAL, as well as in its acquisition of certain participation in the “Arco Norte” and “Pacífico Sur” highway projects, advising BlackRock in various acquisition transactions including those involving social infrastructure assets (penitentiary centers and hospitals), advising Riverstone in the formation of Joint Ventures for the development of naval and power generation projects, advising Thermion Energy in its acquisition of the “Montecristo” power generation project, advising Goldman Sachs in its Joint Venture with GBM in connection with its acquisition of the “Montecristo” power generation project, advising Goldman Sachs in its Joint Venture with GBM in connection with the “Tres Mesas” power generation project, advising L Catterton in its acquisition of “Cholula”, advising Diageo in the acquisition of Don Julio, advising Glisco Partners in the investment of “Grupo Hunan”, “Mármoles Arca” and “Mezcal de Amor”, as well as in the capital raising of Luuna and Urbvan, among others.
Mr. Barrera also has a deep understanding of ESG matters, in particular as they relate to governance, including setting-up governance structures that include diversity standards, ESG policies and internal compliance review methods.
Mr. Barrera recently represented Global Infrastructure Partners in its first equity investment in Mexico through the acquisition of Saavi Energy, as well as KKR in its investment in Sempra Energy and Canadian Pacific Railway in its acquisition of Kansas City Southern.
Mr. Barrera worked as an International Attorney in the New York office of Sullivan and Cromwell, LLP from 2013 to 2014 and he is admitted to practice law in Mexico and New York.

Mr. Barrera obtained his law degree from Universidad Iberoamericana, in Mexico City, in 2008; he also obtained a specialization in commercial law from Universidad Panamericana, in Mexico City, in 2009. Mr. Barrera obtained his master’s degree in Economic and Energy Policy Administration (MPA) from Columbia University in 2012 and his Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Fordham University in 2013.
