Long a nursery for environmental legal talent, Vera y Asociados is a specialist boutique that undertakes the full range of environmental matters but that also has a strong dedication to strategy origination and complex litigation. Firm senior partner and practice head Luis Vera has a 30-year plus trajectory in the sector; a some time director of the Agencia de Seguridad, Energía y Ambiente (ASEA), he is undoubtedly one of the practice area’s founding fathers and frequently consults on draft legislation. He is flanked by younger partners: Alejandro Aldana (who focuses on manufacturing, water law, environmental impact matters, environmental issues associated with traditional and renewable energy projects, and environmental, administrative and tax litigation); María Cristina Hernández C (environmental matters concerning tourism, mining, infrastructure and energy projects; water law, environmental impact assessment, forestry land use change, hazardous waste management and environmental audits, along with social impact assessment and indigenous consultation); and administrative and constitutional litigation specialist Genaro García, whose background also includes relevant public sector experience at both PROFEPA and ASEA. Key associates include Israel Vera (no relation), who focuses on federal zoning issues and can draw on some seven years public sector experience at SEMARNAT and ASEA; and contentious specialist Miguel Cardozo (particularly as regards water litigation), a July-2022 hire from Morales Banuet y Asociados. Recent matters include environmental impact and risk reports (among other matters), for the likes of New Fortress Energy, Mexico Pacific, Igasamex Neomexicana and Iberdrola; advising tourist developments including Marina Puerto Escondido Loreto, Misión XXI and Puerta Cortés on environmental compliance; and handling residues regularisation on behalf of Polimeros Especiales and Arkema. The team has also undertaken representations before administrative entities including CENACE, CFE, SEMARNAT and PROFEPA, among others. However, associate trials-specialist Izanami Garcia moved in house in August 2022.
