Alex Karopoulos

Alex Karopoulos is a partner of our tax practice and heads our Tax Controversy group. As a leader of our tax controversy & litigation practice Alex has extensive experience in advising multinational companies on all stages of tax controversy. He represents clients before the tax authorities in the context of tax audits and all court instances, including the Supreme Administrative Court. He currently litigates some of the biggest tax assessments ever made in Greece and has won multi-million tax disputes concerning income tax and VAT. Alex has also successfully challenged before the courts the legality of taxes, leading to their abolishment. Alex also specialises in VAT and other indirect taxes (including stamp duty and insurance premium tax) and has extensive experience in advising on the indirect tax treatment of a broad range of cross-border and local transactions carried out by multinational companies. He regularly advises on the indirect tax aspects of corporate reorganisations, mergers and acquisitions. Alex works with multinational clients across most industries, including financial and insurance services, real estate, public procurement, energy, IT, aviation, pharma, travel and retail. Alex teaches VAT in the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation courses, as well as shipping taxation in the Athens University of Economics and Business. He was admitted to the Athens Bar in 1999 and joined our firm in 2001.

Anastasia is a senior associate specialising in income taxation, corporate taxation, real estate taxation and international taxation. Her educational background includes LLM courses in international trading, Swiss corporate tax law and international tax law, focusing on cross-border exchange of information. She is part of the client advisory services team dealing with issues related to corporate taxation, structuring and holding real estate in Greece, involving both domestic and international clients and cross-border transactions, and including business restructurings and M&As. She was admitted to the Athens Bar in 2019 and joined our firm within the same year. Anastasia is admitted before the Court of First Instance. Anastasia Makri
Anastasia Makri
Anastasia Makri is head of our Energy and Insurance practice groups. Her areas of practice are M&A and project development, with a focus on energy and infrastructure. She has worked on large-scale projects involving private entities and state agencies and has extensive experience in transactions involving complex commercial contracts and negotiations. From 2009 to 2017 she led the firm’s legal team that successfully supported the implementation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, one of the largest and most complex construction projects in Greece hosting the new venues of the Greek National Library and the Greek National Opera. She regularly advises clients on various energy, privatization and infrastructure projects. Anastasia’s expertise covers insurance and regularly advises international and local insurers, reinsurers and intermediaries on insurance transactions, insurance regulatory, and contractual matters. Prior to joining the firm she held in-house counsel position for a major credit insurance company. Anastasia was admitted to the Piraeus Bar in 2000 and joined our firm in 2007. Anastasia Veneti-Pagoni
Anastasia focuses on real estate, dispute resolution and corporate law and commercial contracts. Her practice involves real estate matters, such as property acquisitions, commercial and residential lease agreements, as well as the establishment of in rem securities on real estate. Anastasia represents clients on a regular basis before the First Instance Court, the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court, with respect to disputes arising from real estate, breach of contract, recovery of debts and claims and tort. She was admitted to the Athens Bar in 2011 and joined us in 2018. Anastasia is admitted before the Supreme Court.

Anna Paraskeva is a partner of our private clients practice. Anna specializes in income, real estate, gift and inheritance taxation. She focuses mainly on tax planning for high net-worth individuals, expatriation planning and asset planning. Her practice also extends to advising charitable organizations. Anna has extensive experience in advising companies on the implementation of employee incentive schemes, from a Greek tax perspective. She was admitted to the Piraeus Bar in 2007 and joined our firm within the same year. Anna is admitted before the Court of First Instance.

Antonis Giannakodimos is a partner of our corporate commercial practice. Antonis advises on corporate and commercial law across several industries, with an emphasis on commercial transactions and a particular focus on agency and distribution agreements. He has also gained extensive experience in the E-commerce and TMT fields through his involvement in a series of innovative cases advising on a wide range of regulatory, corporate, and commercial issues. In addition, he regularly advises clients active in the Food & Beverages sector. Antonis was admitted to the Athens Bar in 2011 and joined our firm in 2012. He is also admitted before the Court of Appeals of Athens.

Athina Skolarikou is a partner and  heads our Corporate & Commercial practice. She focuses on corporate and commercial law and consumer protection, contracts and M&A transactions. She has extensive experience in general corporate practice, advising multinational corporations on structuring their business in Greece, company formation, general corporate matters, corporate governance as well as regulatory and compliance issues. She regularly advises international and domestic clients on international business transactions and has significant experience in handling complex and sophisticated cross border M&A projects, including joint ventures, corporate restructuring, and mergers and acquisitions. She is also engaged in structuring all kinds of commercial and contractual arrangements, including lease agreements. She has worked with multinational clients active in the IT, technology and telecommunications sector, as well as in the hotel and leisure industry, advising on a wide range of regulatory, corporate, commercial, contractual and compliance issues. She joined our firm in 1997 and was admitted to the Athens Bar in 1998. Athina is admitted before the Greek Supreme Court.

Dr Constantine Sarantis is a senior partner of our firm. With 40 years of experience in the field, Constantine is also one of our firm’s chief litigators and has built a solid reputation in contentious Court hearings and witness cross-examinations. Several of the court judgments in cases he has handled constitute part of the accepted and quoted jurisprudence on a number of legal topics. Constantine provides advice to both Greek and international high net-worth individuals on a wide variety of areas associated with family matters, succession, real estate, estate planning and management. Several of Constantine’s studies have been included in legal publications and he is a contributor to the highly-acclaimed Athens daily Kathimerini where he regularly comments on current legal issues of broader interest. He was admitted to the Athens Bar in 1972 and joined the firm in 2001, after having served as chief legal counsel of a major oil company for seventeen years. Constantine is admitted before the Supreme Court.

Danae Papadatou is a senior associate of our dispute resolution practice. She has experience in commercial and intellectual property litigation, as well as other civil legal disputes, such as breaches of contract, debt collection cases, medical malpractice, company disputes and disputes arising from any kind of torts, both for plaintiffs and defendants. She also advises clients on enforcement proceedings, as well as on all types of business transactions and commercial agreements, such as leasing, franchising and commercial cooperation. Danai Falconaki is a partner focusing on corporate, commercial, anti-trust, M&A and bankruptcy law. She regularly advises and assists domestic corporate clients and international businesses operating in Greece on day-to-day corporate commercial practices and their regulatory compliance. Danai’s practice covers a wide range of multinational M&A transactions, which include competition-related matters. She is also engaged in carrying out legal due diligence, drafting and negotiating transactional documentation and handling Greek law formalities required for the completion of acquisitions. Daphne specialises in corporate and international taxation with particular focus on the financial and insurance sector as well as on finance and capital markets transactions. She has an experience of over twenty years in advising clients on a broad range of tax matters, such as in relation to private equity acquisitions, structured finance, funds, corporate restructurings and complex corporate taxation matters. She was admitted to the Athens Bar Association in 1995 and joined our firm in 1998. Daphne is admitted before the Court of Appeals. of redomiciling" in the IBA 33rd International Financial Law Conference held in Athens in May 2016. Diana Tsourapa is a partner of our tax practice. Diana focuses on tax controversy & litigation and she has extensive experience in handling tax audits of multinational companies, including tax matters such as income tax and transfer pricing, VAT, stamp duty and real estate taxes. She works closely with clients in order to determine the appropriate line of defense and represents them before tax authorities and courts of all instances, including the Supreme Administrative Court. In addition, Diana has extensive experience in advising multinational companies across most industries on the full scope of corporate tax issues arising in Greece. Dimitra Rachouti is a partner of our energy practice. She has enhanced knowledge of the Greek and EU energy regulation and long experience in advising international and domestic clients in a wide range of energy projects, including RES and conventional power generation projects, storage projects, electricity and natural gas transmission projects. She is specialized in advising on regulatory issues, in the drafting and negotiation of M&A documentation and corporate PPA(s) and in leading due diligence reviews in connection with the acquisition or financing of energy projects. Her experience also includes advising clients on the environmental, real estate and bankability aspects of energy projects. She was admitted to the Athens Bar in 2004 and joined our firm in 2024. Dimitris Zepos is the managing partner of our firm. As a member in our corporate commercial practice he has advised foreign legal entities operating in Greece on a wide array of issues related to their establishment and operation in the country. He has guided foreign clients, both corporate and high-net-worth individuals, through the intricacies of doing business in Greece. Dimitris also consults corporate clients, mostly from the US and western Europe on compliance and business crimes related matters. He was admitted to the Athens Bar in 1992 and joined our firm in the same year.

Dimitris heads our dispute resolution practice. Dimitris has acted as lead counsel representing clients across the industry in complex court litigation covering the whole range of civil, commercial and corporate disputes, both domestic and international. He is an expert in appellate proceedings and Supreme Court litigation, having published extensively in those fields. Same holds true for arbitration- related- litigation. He has acted as counsel or lead counsel in numerous high profile set-aside proceedings before Greek State Courts. He has also handled several complex cases on recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards. Dimitris has acted as counsel in a great number of complex international and domestic commercial arbitrations. His practice encompasses disputes in all key industry sectors, namely construction and infrastructure, energy and financial services. Dimitris has also represented corporate clients in numerous arbitrations initiated by or against the Greek State or Greek State-owned companies in disputes arising under public contracts. Dimitris is Associate Professor at Democritus University of Thrace Law School, where he teaches Civil Procedure and Arbitration. He is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court.

Dimitris’s expertise focuses on tax controversy involving both direct and indirect taxation, as well as domestic and international law interpretation issues. He has extensive experience in dispute resolution and has successfully pleaded on such matters before courts of all instances, including the Supreme Administrative Court. Dimitris has also advised domestic and multinational companies on direct and indirect tax matters, as well as on administrative and court procedures. He has extensive experience in all stages of tax controversy and has represented before tax authorities clients active in a variety of fields, including information technology, pharma, real estate, travel and retail. He was admitted to the Athens Bar Association in 2006 and joined our firm in 2014. Dimitris is admitted before the Supreme Court.

Efthymis is a member of our finance & capital markets group. His primary focus is capital markets. Efthymis acts for lenders, borrowers, credit and financial institutions in various types of projects, including ECM/DCM transactions. Prior to joining our firm, Efthymis was involved in several M&A projects and advised investment firms and other financial institutions on day-to-day issues, as well as on complex and high-profile transactions, both domestic and international. Efthymis is admitted before the Court of Appeals. He was admitted to the Athens Bar Association in 2011 and joined our firm in 2021.

Elina heads the firm’s private client practice. She brings in years of experience in international tax matters and the way they impact the structuring of wealth and the performance of investment activity. She has been working with multijurisdictional family offices, asset managers and family-owned businesses on wealth structuring and estate planning, multi-generational governance and estate planning matters. She is active in the start-up ecosystem, working with start-ups and their investors, on tax aspects over the life of the activity from set up to exit, with a particular focus on compensation mechanisms for founders and executives. Elina is acknowledged as a highly regarded tax practitioner in Greece by a number of professional directories, such the International Tax Review (ITR), Legal 500, Who is Who Legal and Global Elite. She has been with Zepos & Yannopoulos since 2004 and is a member of the firm’s executive committee.

She commonly advises on compliance matters with respect to transfer pricing requirements and assists clients in addressing transfer pricing issues in Greece. Elina is well versed in the elaboration and implementation of business restructurings, involving both domestic and international clients. Her experience in working on different jurisdictions enables her to provide insightful advice on tax implications of ventures with cross-border elements. Before joining the firm, Elina was employed in DG TAXUD of the European Commission, where she got engaged in infringement cases with regards to direct taxation in Greece, Cyprus, Luxembourg, Portugal and the UK. Ioanna Poulakou is a senior associate of our corporate commercial practice. Ioanna focuses on corporate and commercial law. She regularly provides legal advice to domestic and international corporations on Greek corporate law issues, including company formation and establishment formalities, and provides support on issues related to their day-to-day operation. She is also regularly involved in corporate restructuring and mergers and acquisitions. Furthermore, she has participated in several due diligence exercises, mainly examining compliance with corporate obligations and formalities. Ioanna is a senior associate focusing on corporate and international taxation, with particular focus on the financial sector as well as on finance and capital markets. She has extensive experience in advising both domestic and foreign banks on matters of taxation. Ioanna has also gained significant experience in corporate taxation, by advising multinational companies on a wide range of matters involving, among others, the assessment of tax risks, strategies for mitigating tax exposure and support in the course of tax audits. She has worked across various industries, including financial services (banking, real estate, insurance, investment services), Large Corporates (telecommunications, oil & gas, logistics), and the Gaming Sector (casinos, online gaming). Prior to joining the firm, Ioanna held the position of Tax Manager in a Big4 firm. Ioanna is admitted before the Court of Appeals. Iraklis has extensive experience in both constitutional and administrative law, in a vast array of legal fields. These include tax law, tax and administrative procedures law, public procurement law, investment, business and professions licensing regulations, radio and television law, as well as interim remedies and precautionary measures issues. As a member of the Court he was part of numerous administrative, legislative and judicial committees and councils, such as the drafting committee for the Code of Administrative Procedures, the Miscarriages of Justice Court and the Disciplinary Council of the Council of State. He has also taught in various seminars organized by the Council of State, the National School of Judges and the Athens Bar Association. Iraklis Tsakopoulos joined our firm in 2018, after having served the Council of State (Supreme Administrative Court) for more than thirty years—the last nine as Councilor of State.

Katerina is a senior associate of our Public Procurement & Concessions practice group. She has broad experience in all aspects of EU and public/ administrative law and regularly represents clients before the Administrative Courts while she has also handled complaints on alleged breaches of EU law before the European Commission. She is experienced in all aspects of administrative law and handles a wide array of regulatory matters in a broad spectrum of industries. Her expertise also covers public procurement law issues where she provides end-to-end advice to clients, from the review of tender documents and compilation of bids to handling tender-related dispute procedures in and out of Court. Manolis Zacharakis is a partner of our employment & labour practice. He works closely with the firm’s clients, advising on various employment matters arising from their operations in Greece, including termination of employment contracts, collective redundancies, working hours, pregnancy protection, employee handbooks, etc. Manolis is often engaged in the employment aspects of business transactions, such as corporate restructurings, mergers and close-downs. Maria focuses on competition, anti-trust, M&A law, intellectual property, corporate and commercial law. Her practice covers a wide spectrum of matters pertaining to EU, French and Greek competition law, including cartels, abuse of dominance, merger control, state aid and related issues. Maria is also engaged in carrying out legal due diligences, advising clients on company establishment and structuring, ongoing corporate governance, their entry into commercial agreements and contracts, in drafting share purchase and ancillary agreements and in negotiating for related issues according to the Harvard Negotiation method (attended in Paris). Maria is a PhD candidate in competition law and an active member of two law research institutes in Paris; she was also a Teaching Fellow at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. She was admitted to the Athens Bar in 2012, qualified as French lawyer in 2017 and joined our firm in 2020. Maria leads our firm’s corporate tax advisory and compliance team. She advises multinationals on the full spectrum of corporate and international tax matters relevant to their Greek business, involving entry in the market/set up guidance, financing, operation, restructuring or exit of their Greek subsidiaries. Maria commonly advises clients on tax compliance aspects, assisting them determine tax risks and remediation measures and is handling corporate and international tax disputes. Maria is also active in M&As, assisting clients with tax due diligence, negotiations and structuring of transactions. She also specialises in energy taxation and has extensive experience in tax matters relevant to the acquisition, sales and generally restructurings of businesses active in the energy industry. She was admitted to the Athens Bar in 1999 and joined our firm in 1998. Maria is a member of the firm’s executive committee.

Marilisa Myrat is a senior associate of our corporate commercial practice. Marilisa focuses on corporate law, M&A and civil law. She regularly provides legal advice to domestic and international corporations on Greek corporate law and compliance issues, including corporations listed in the stock exchange. She also has extensive experience in finance & capital markets and in complex international business transactions, including share deals, corporate restructurings, bond loan agreements, securitizations and refinancing. Furthermore, she provides support on issues arising from day-to-day operations of corporations and on a wide array of legal issues related to civil law, as well as drafting and commenting on various transaction documents and agreements. She has also been involved in various due diligence exercises. Marilisa has handled various litigation cases and has experience as a litigation lawyer. Marina Allamani is a partner of our tax practice and co-heads our Real Estate tax practice. She has extensive experience in real estate projects and regularly advises international and domestic clients on the structure of their acquisitions, financing, as well as a variety of tax issues relating to real estate—corporate income tax, 15% special real estate tax, real estate transfer taxes, etc. She is also heavily involved in international business transactions, including joint ventures, corporate reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions. Marina has worked with multinational companies active in the construction sector and has advised them in relation to tax issues pertaining to infrastructure projects and concession agreements. Mary Georgiou is a senior associate of our corporate commercial practice. Mary focuses in real estate. She advises international and domestic clients on real estate matters such as the purchase and sale of properties, as well as commercial and residential lease agreements. She also has significant experience in due diligence of real estate portfolios and regularly advises clients on the lawful transfer of title. Mary represents clients on a regular basis before the First Instance Court with respect to the establishment of in rem securities, disputes arising from breach of contract, recovery of debts and claims and tort. Matina is a senior associate of our employment and labour practice. She also advises on TUPE related issues, while she is often engaged in Legal Due Diligence projects. Before joining the firm, Matina was working as an associate in a Greek business law firm for six years. She focused on employment and labour issues from a consulting and litigation standpoint, having also handled various civil litigation cases for domestic and multinational clients. She has a strong track record in representing clients in procurement and privatisation procedures in a wide array of industries including energy, defense and pharmaceuticals, her work includes all areas of tender related matters from responding to call for tenders to tender related dispute procedures in and out of court. She has acted in many large-scale procurement and privatisation projects including marinas, motorways, casino licenses and multimillion framework agreements tendered by the Health Procurement Committee. Sofia also advises on the full spectrum of energy related issues including compliance, electricity, natural gas and hydrocarbons’ regulation, financing and licensing requirements of Renewable Energy Projects and relevant transactional work. She has acted for leading energy companies in the renewables, oil and gas sectors and has been heavily involved in various energy and infrastructure projects presenting complex regulatory aspects. Sonia Melegou is a partner of our corporate commercial practice and co-heads our real estate practice. Sonia specializes in real estate, dispute resolution, intellectual property and corporate law. With over 15 years' experience in the real estate practice advising international and domestic clients she has a solid track record on property transactions, such as acquisitions and disposals, commercial and residential lease agreements, and sale and lease back arrangements. She has also significant experience in the creation of in rem securities and the restructuring of collaterals, as well as in the due diligence of real estate portfolios. She has also worked with multinational clients active in the luxury goods business regarding trademark infringement matters and anti-counterfeiting strategies. Sonia also represents clients before the First Instance Court and the Court of Appeals, on disputes arising from real estate, leases, trademark infringement, breach of contract, recovery of debts and claims and tort. Sonia is also a CEDR Accredited Mediator and one of the first 50 mediators accredited by the Greek Ministry of Justice. Spyros Maratos is a partner and senior litigator in our tax & accounting practice. Spyros specializes in taxation, import duties and customs rules, regulations and legislation, as well as in EU law matters. He has extensive experience in litigation and alternative dispute resolution (out-of-court and judicial settlements). He has pleaded for numerous cases before the Supreme Administrative Court (Council of State), the Administrative Courts of First Instance and of Second Instance (Courts of Appeals), and has also pleaded before the Court of Justice of the EU in Luxembourg and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg. He has also advised domestic and multinational corporations on direct and indirect tax matters, as well as administrative (tax, customs) and court procedure. Furthermore, he has handled negotiations with tax and customs authorities on out-of-court and judicial settlement. He has also published extensively in the above- mentioned aspects of law. Spyros was legal and tax counsel for Esso Pappas, Exxon's subsidiary in Greece (1977-1984) and for its successor, EKO ABEE (1984-2006). He was also section head of this company’s Legal Dept. He was admitted to the Athens Bar in 1975 and joined our firm in 2000. Since 1981, Spyros has been admitted to plead before the Greek Supreme Courts (Areios Pagos and Council of State).

Stamatis Drakakakis is a partner and head of our Antitrust & Competition practice. He was admitted to the Athens Bar in 2002 and he joined our firm in the end of 2019.   Stamatis covers the full range of EU and Greek competition work, including cartel investigations, merger control, JVs, distribution agreements, unilateral conducts, state aid measures and state intervention. He has represented multinational and major Greek corporations at both EU (European Commission and EU Courts) and national level (Hellenic Competition Commission, Sector Regulators and Greek Administrative Courts). His experience spans a wide spectrum of industries including electronic communications, energy, financial sector, constructions, airlines, broadcasting, retail, pharmaceutical, chemicals, steel, and defence. He has also been involved in cases where competition law interfaces with public procurement rules. He has assisted the European Commission before the General Court of EU in numerous cases. Theodore is head of our TMT & Data practice. Theodore has extensive experience in advising technology multinationals, global telcos and social media companies on issues relating to new technologies and media, covering all aspects of electronic communications, data protection, cybersecurity, content regulation, intellectual property, telecommunications and e-commerce law. He also advises on consumer protection, marketing, product labelling and product liability matters. His advice pertains to novel and complex issues on cloud computing, connected devices and blockchain solutions, while he often interacts on issues of regulatory practice with the Hellenic Data Protection Authority and the Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission. Theodore is included in the European Data Protection Board (EDPB)'s Support Pool of Experts for the fields of "Technical expertise in New Technologies and Information Security" and "Legal expertise in New Technologies”. Violeta is a member of our Antitrust & Competition team. She has vast experience in providing compliance advice on all aspects of competition law and most prominently regarding abuse of dominance, cartel investigations, distribution agreements, other vertical and horizontal agreements, and merger control. She advises diverse corporate clients successfully active in a variety of industries, including consumer goods, F&Bs, pharmaceutical, energy, digital platforms, financial sector, and construction. Violeta represents clients before the Hellenic Competition Commission, the Greek Appellate Court, and the Greek Civil Courts (damages claims). Over the past decade, she has been involved in numerous remarkable cases before the National Competition Authority, in merger control (including Phase II/ commitments), settlement, and adversary proceedings, concerning novel and intricate issues. When handling distribution law matters and digital platforms, her approach includes commercial law and regulatory compliance advice. In 2012, after her postgraduate studies, Violeta concluded an internship (as a Blue Book stagiaire) at the Legal Service of the European Commission (AIDE Team (State aids and dumping) (SJ.C)). For more than 25 years he is focusing on tax planning for multi-national personal, active business and investment activities, with a particular emphasis on tax structuring for Greek and non-Greek business owners and investors. An important part of Yerassimos’ work involves assisting families and their family offices on asset structuring with the formation, management and periodic evaluation of multinational and multi-generational centralized control and management structures. In addition to numerous speaking engagements, organisation memberships and publications, Yerassimos has lectured at the Athens School of Economics on International Tax Law (Post-Graduate programme on Taxation) from 2003 to 2012.

Yolanda is a senior associate and focuses on Greek and EU data protection, privacy, cybersecurity, competition & antitrust, corporate and commercial law. She advises on all aspects of EU and Greek data protection compliance issues, including assisting clients in identifying compliance gaps, both in the context of GDPR compliance audits and M&A due diligence reviews, assessing and managing relevant risks, and in taking steps to ensure overall compliance, including conducting trainings and workshops. Yolanda’s practice also covers data protection litigation, as well as advisory and assistance tasks on day-to-day matters, including drafting and negotiating privacy terms in contracts, drafting privacy policies and notices, data processing agreements, consent forms, the use of new technologies, ePrivacy issues, data breach management and notification, international data transfers, and carrying out data protection impact assessments.
