A & K Metaxopoulos and Partners Law Firm is considered a top IP, TMT, dispute resolution, patent, advertising and white-collar law firm in Greece. In our 65 years of expertise we have handled a vast variety of cases in many industry sectors, by representing key international and domestic clients.

Our firm was founded in Athens in 1955 by Agis Metaxopoulos, who started, as it was common at that time, his own private practice as a “solo” practitioner.

Soon, due to his artistic background and close friendship with some of the most prominent Greek authors and artists such as Manos Hadjidakis, Nikos Koundouros and later on Theo Aggelopoulos too, Agis decided to deal with an, unknown are of law at that time in Greece - intellectualproperty.

He soon became the synonym of IP rights protection in Greece and was often referred to by his fellow colleagues as the “Dean” of intellectual property rights’ practitioners.

In 1984 his son, Kriton Metaxopoulos, LLM graduate of the London School of Economics joined the firm, which soon became a highly specialized law firm in intellectual and industrial property law, the entertainment industry and mass media law as well as commercial and civil Law. In 2000 the management of the office was entrusted to Kriton Metaxopoulos. Kriton’s active international presence since 1992, when he was appointed Legal Counsel to a family run conglomerate of international catering in multinational fraud litigation and commercial arbitration, won the firm a place among the leading firms in that field of law.

The firm thereafter based its expansion on proper utilization of its associates’ skills; most of them began their professional career with the firm and thus easily assimilated its principles and philosophy and continue to work with the firm to this day. Since 2000 the firm grew rapidly in size whilst at the same time being included in the top ten law firms in Greece. In 2007 the partners decided not to join the “expansion race” of big law firms and rather to focus on the areas of law in which the firm had traditionally excelled, namely intellectual property, dispute resolution, advertising and TMT, corporate litigation and commercial law, civil law and competition as well as white-collar crime.

The philosophy of our firm is simple. We do not do less than we are able to, not only for “high profile” cases but for all our clients. We are a group of people with mutual respect and trust for each other, working always as a team for one common goal: To serve our clients’ interests in the best possible manner.

Our work ethic and mentality suits more that of a cooperative of experienced lawyers, all experts in their field of law, assisted by a highly educated and hardworking administrative staff, rather than that of a faceless and rigid firm.

On a national level the firm is supported by a network of associated law firms and lawyers across Greece (Thessaloniki, Komotini, Patras, Crete, Rhodes amongst others) who offer full support to our clients, always in close cooperation with a partner or senior associate of the firm.

The firm’s staff now consists of 7 full-time and 3 of counsel lawyers joined by 4 experienced in-house administrative, financial and marketing assistants and a highly skilled boutique firm of tax consultants.

International presence and alliances: The firm is the only Greek member of the International Lawyers Network (ILN) and of the Global Advertising Lawyers Alliance (GALA), a global network of law firms with expertise in advertising and media law issues. In view of its GALA membership, foreign major corporations often assign to the firm to review their commercials and request “clearance” for advertising directed to the Greek market.

The firm provides detailed contributions regarding the Greek legal framework to various international ILN and GALA publications (books and handouts) concerning:  advertising law, privacy law, alcohol advertising, sweepstakes and contests, social media, green marketing, ambush marketing, plain packaging and Covid developments on advertising and other areas of law.

We also contribute with articles on a regular basis to Lexology, the global legal intelligence platform, to the ILN IP Insider as well as to the IAM Patent Weekly International Report. Furthermore, our associates Achilleas Christodoulou and Elena Nikolarea are the authors of the ICLG 2022 Litigation & Dispute Resolution Guide for Greece.

International distinctions: Our common goal to keep working as a team in order to serve our clients’ interests in the best possible manner, has been recognized by our peers. Most recently, The Legal 500 EMEA 2023 edition ranked our firm in IP (Top Tier), TMT (Top Tier), Dispute Resolution and White-Collar Crime and Chambers Europe 2023 edition also ranked us once again in TMT. Our firm has also been recently recognized, in 2023, among the overall Top 20 Law Firms in Greece by “Top Ranked Legal”, which especially recognized our firm in our areas of expertise, including IP, TMT, patents, dispute resolution and white-collar crime. In addition, we have received praise from various publications, once again in the past year, such as Managing IP, IAM Patent 1000, Patent & Trademark Lawyers Magazines, etc. Moreover, WTR 1000, in its 2023 edition has ranked our firm among the leading Greek law firms in trademark practice and our managing partner Kriton Metaxopoulos as a Recommended Individual.

Furthermore, our managing partner Kriton Metaxopoulos’ unique expertise and reputation led once again to his recognition as a leading individual by Chambers Europe 2023 in Dispute Resolution and TMT.  In addition to this, Kriton Metaxopoulos was listed in the Hall of Fame for Dispute Resolution and recognized as a leading individual in TMT, Intellectual Property and White-Collar Crime in The Legal 500 EMEA 2023, whilst our partner Irini Daroussou was recognized as Next Generation Partner in Intellectual Property and Recommended Lawyer in TMT and Dispute Resolution. Asterios Syssilas was also recognized as Recommended Lawyer in TMT and White-Collar Crime and Elena Nikolarea as a Rising Star in TMT. Marilena Nikolaraki, Achilleas Christodoulou and Elena Nikolarea were also mentioned as key-lawyers in the above areas of law.

Additionally, Marilena Nikolaraki, was the winner of the award Trademark Lawyer of the Year, awarded by Euromoney Legal Media Group’s Women in Business Law Awards EMEA 2022. It is noteworthy to mention that our firm, as well as two of our women lawyers, had been shortlisted in a total of six different categories:
