The partners of TRP are currently involved with three arbitration institutions, the Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, ICC and Dubai International Arbitration Center.
Prof Dr Tarek F. Riad, the managing partner of TRP, has acted as chairman of arbitral tribunals, arbitrators, counsels and experts on Egyptian law in numerous arbitrations in front of the ICC, Cairo Regional Arbitration Center, Dubai International Arbitration Centre, Abu Dhabi International Arbitration Centre and the ICSID.
Prof Dr Riad, was a member of the Supreme Arbitration Committee of the Ministry of Oil and Gas. In May 2011, Prof Dr Riad was appointed as a member of the Consultative Council, responsible for preparing draft laws for the Egyptian Council of Ministries.
In his capacity as a member of the economic committee of the Supreme Policy, Prof Dr Riad was involved in drafting numerous Egyptian commercial laws such as the Companies Law, the Telecommunications Law, the Investment Law and the Special Economic Court Law. Dr Riad was also chair of the two committees responsible for drafting the Special Economic Court Law as well as the Companies Law.
In 2014, Prof Dr Riad was appointed as a member of the investment dispute settlement technical committee chaired by the Prime Minister of Egypt.
Prof Dr Riad was also the special legal advisor to the speaker of the Egyptian Parliament from 1992-2000. Dr Riad’s responsibilities in this regard involved the review of investment laws and related regulations.
Prof Dr Riad was a member of the board of trustees of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) and the chairman of the executive committee of DIAC (2008 to 2019), alternate member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration (2012 to 2018), and member of the scientific council of the ICC World Business Law Institute (2004 to 2021), and member of the Emeritus Council of the ICC Institute (2021 up to date), Professor Riad is also a designated member of the ICSID panel of arbitrators from 2017 up to date and panel of conciliators from 2018 up to date. He is also professor and the head of the business and commercial law department at the German University in Cairo. Dr Riad was a member of the Egyptian council of state (1980–1985).
KRR represented the Kuwaiti government in arbitration between the Kuwaiti government and the Aminoil Company. The value of the dispute was US $2.5bn.
Prof Dr Riad was involved in drafting the Egyptian Companies Law in his capacity as a member of the Economic Committee of the Supreme Policy Council and chaired the two committees responsible for drafting the Special Economic Court Law, as well as the Companies Law.
Prof Dr Riad has written numerous publications including two books entitled The Applicable Law in Oil & Gas Arbitrations and The Egyptian Companies Law, as well as many articles about arbitration and litigation in Egypt and in addition the legal aspects of doing business in Egypt. He has also given numerous lectures in Egypt about upstream and downstream gas operations at the Cairo Regional Arbitration Center Conferences and Ain Shams Arbitration Center Conferences.
Prof Dr Riad has an LLB from Cairo Law School (1980) and an LLM (1982) and SJD (1985) from Harvard Law School. He has also been a member of the Egyptian Bar since 1982 and New York Bar since 1985.
The late Dr El Kosheri and the late Dr Rashed were members of the committee that drafted the current Egyptian Arbitration Law.
