Ivan Ho
Ivan Ho
 Ivan is a senior partners of the firm and he practices in the areas of Corporate, Banking & Finance and Technology, Multimedia & Telecommunications Law. He has advised on and acted in respect of Malaysian and international transactions including acquisitions as well as disposals of corporations and of the business undertakings of corporations including commercial banks, investment banks, insurance companies, stockbroking companies, takeovers of companies (both friendly and hostile, for offerors and offerees), restructuring and amalgamation of companies, Companies Act section 176 schemes of arrangement, the issuance and offering of shares, debt and other securities, and legal due diligence exercises. He has also advised on incorporation of companies, formation of joint ventures, directors’ responsibilities, shareholders’ rights, and compliance with Malaysian corporate and securities laws generally. Ivan contributes to the Malaysian section of the Simmons & Simmons Navigator Services in respect of. Inter alia, share disclosure requirements and other corporate matters. As part of his IT practice, he has acted for IT companies in relation to licensing agreements, supply contracts and system integration agreements as well as other companies in relation to IT matters. He has also acted for the Association of Merchant Banks Malaysia in advising on the “Guidelines On Electronic Prospectuses and Internet Securities Application” and providing input to the Securities Commission in relation thereto. He has spoken at seminars and conferences relating to companies and securities laws as well as contract laws.

Jalalullail Othman
JAL OTHMAN is a partner in the corporate and commercial law practice group in Shook Lin & Bok, one of the oldest and largest law firm in Malaysia. Jal works with a team of approximately 20 lawyers advising on corporate and commercial deals, both for onshore and cross border clients. His portfolio of work includes advising on a wide range of corporate mergers and acquisitions, business disposal plans, internal company restructuring and joint ventures and other commercial collaborations. Jal’s involvement in the banking and finance practice group of the Firm provides a firm footing in corporate finance and this effectively complements his work in the corporate department. Jal is also very much involved in public sector advisory work and has dealings with several governmental ministries, departments and agencies. These include the following: – Ministry of Finance – Ministry of Higher Education – Economic Planning Unit – The Prime Minister’s Office – The Public Private Partnership Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department (“UKAS”). – Securities Commission – Central Bank of Malaysia The public sector works include concession agreements, facilitation fund agreements, collaboration agreements and business off take agreements. Consistent with the Firm’s policy of driving a global presence, Jal has participated on various international platforms as a speaker, moderator, panelist and commentator. These include conferences, workshops and forums in Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Egypt and Singapore. Jal is also active in the Malaysian corporate scene, holding directorship position in a subsidiary of an international financial institution. As part of the Firm’s holistic participation in the industry, Jal is a member of the technical committee of the Malaysia Accounting Standards Board (“MASB”), the standards setting body for the accounting profession and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (“MIA”). On the academia front, Jal is a member of the Senate of INCEIF University.
Ko Luen Lam
Ko Luen Lam
Ko Luen is a Partner of the firm and he heads the firm’s Arbitration (International & Domestic), Building, Construction & Engineering and Insurance departments. Ko Luen specializes in the areas arbitration, construction disputes, civil and corporate litigation. He appears as counsel in court, arbitration and adjudication hearings. Ko Luen also sits as an arbitrator in arbitration proceedings and an adjudicator in adjudication proceedings. His work experience includes: Advisory, drafting and assisting in negotiations, representing clients (local and multinationals) in court and in domestic and international arbitration proceedings. Advising clients on matters relating to EPCC and REPPA in Malaysia, issues arising out of design and construction of bridges, shipbuilding contracts in China, construction of oil and gas platforms in Malaysia, design and construction of ports in Malaysia, major hydro-electric projects in Sarawak, , construction of major highway in Sarawak, construction work related to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), major projects undertaken in Singapore and Johor relating to construction contracts involving rehabilitation, refurbishment, design, fabrication, shipment, erection, testing, engineering, procurement and construction of terminal export facilities of a butadiene extraction plant, the design and construction of a major water treatment plant in Johor, matters relating to the manufacturer and supply of Electric Train Sets (ETS), contracts relating to major tunnelling works and a major joint venture involving over 11,000 hectares of land in Sabah. Providing legal representation to foreign governments including the Government of Singapore, the Government of India and the Government of Laos in proceedings in Malaysia. Arbitration proceedings under various institutional rules including the AIAC (formerly known as KLRCA) Rules, the SIAC Rules, the UNCITRAL Rules, the PAM Rules and the ICC Rules of Arbitration Adjudication proceedings under the Construction Industry Payment and Adjudication Act (CIPAA).
Mei Lin Khong
Mei Lin Khong
Mei Lin is a senior partner of the firm and heads the Loan & Debt Restructuring department. She has over 30 years of experience in the areas of banking, debt restructuring, corporate, real estate and commercial transactions. Her experience in banking covers a broad range of banking transactions including bilateral and syndicated loans, club deals, security sharing arrangements, infrastructure and project financing, ship financing, off-shore and cross border loan transactions. She also advises and acts for banks, bondholders, trustees, agent banks in complex debt restructurings, formal schemes of arrangement under Section 176 of the Companies Act 1965, debt restructuring schemes under the Corporate Debt Restructuring Committee of Bank Negara Malaysia (CDRC) and work-outs under Special Administrators appointed pursuant to the Pengurusan Danaharta Nasional Berhad Act 1998. Mei Lin has extensive experience in acting for buyers and sellers of non-performing loans (NPLs) and has been involved in all aspects of the transaction from both the buyer's and the seller's perspective including the due diligence and bidding process, advising and structuring the special purpose vehicle to acquire the NPLs, drafting and reviewing the sale and purchase agreement, regulatory compliance, vesting and transfer of the NPLs and post-acquisition work. She regularly advises and acts in sale and purchase transactions involving shares of companies, office and commercial buildings, data centre, development land, industrial buildings and residential properties, joint venture development projects, receivership and liquidator sales and sales by public auctions and open tenders.
Michael Soo
Michael Soo
Michael Soo is the current Managing Partner of the firm and heads the Intellectual Property and Information Technology & Licensing departments. He has practised exclusively in all areas of IP law, with emphasis on enforcement and civil litigation, for over 35 years. He has appeared as lead counsel or co-counsel in a number of infringement and/or passing-off actions before the High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court (formerly known as Supreme Court). In addition to advisory and litigation work in all areas of intellectual property law, he has initiated, conducted and concluded settlement negotiations involving intellectual property rights leading to amicable resolution of disputes before litigation as well as cases pending before the courts. He has on many occasions been asked by potential litigants or their legal counsel in cases where he was not representing either party to give a non-binding opinions, as an informal guideline or basis for settlement negotiations. He appeared as lead counsel in a trial involving alleged copyright infringement of several well-known brands of software before the Kuching Sessions Court pursuant to an ad hoc licence granted by the Rt Honourable Chief Judge of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak. The trial was probably one of the few fully contested infringement actions involving software instituted in Malaysia in recent years. The alleged offender was one of the largest civil engineering firms in Malaysia. The Court acquitted the alleged offender of all the charges. The Public Prosecutor's appeal was dismissed by the appeal courts. In addition to this, he frequently handles advisory and contentious cases involving domain names dispute and "cybersquatting". Michael is a panelist of domain name dispute resolution administered by Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration and had adjudicated on a number of domain name dispute cases. Michael has presented papers on intellectual property law in seminars and conferences organised by the Bar Council of Malaysia, and at several international, regional and local conferences including the 12th Commonwealth Law Association Conference and several seminars and conferences organised by World Intellectual Property Organization (“WIPO”). He lectured on copyright and design law for the Patent Agent Examination since its inception in 1997, and on intellectual property law at the Institute of Judicial and Legal Training (ILKAP), of the Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia. Michael also regularly contributes articles and updates on IP in leading magazines.
Romesh Abraham
Romesh Abraham
Romesh Abraham has been a litigation partner in the firm since 1991 and is currently Head of the Labour and Industrial Disputes Department of the firm. His areas of practice include employment and administrative law and general tort and insurance claims. He has appeared in arbitrations conducted under the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) pertaining to cross border joint venture and telecommunications disputes. Romesh has represented clients on a variety of employment disputes in the Industrial Court, High Court and at appellate level. He has also advised and acted as counsel in administrative and planning law issues and disputes involving local authorities. He has presented papers at several conferences including the Commonwealth Law Conference, the Asia Pacific In-House Counsel Summit and the Malaysian Law Conference on topics pertaining to the arbitration process, judicial review of administrative action and the preparation and presentation of evidence and legal argument for trial in court.
