John trained as a solicitor at Linklaters' London and Hong Kong offices, which included a secondment to Merrill Lynch. He then worked in Maples and Calder's BVI office, before joining Mourant Ozannes.

John obtained a degree in Law with French Law from Aberdeen University, a Post-graduate Diploma in Law at Nottingham Trent University and the Legal Practice Course at BPP in London. John was admitted as a solicitor in England and Wales (currently non-practising) in 2004 and as a solicitor in the British Virgin Islands in 2005.
