James Crookes

James is the Head of our Real Estate Global Sector, and is Head of our Property Group. He has many years’ experience of commercial real estate, with a particular focus on undertaking investment and asset management work. He has acted for clients on a wide variety of acquisitions, disposals, fundings, developments and lettings, including major portfolio transactions, joint ventures and complex financing models.  James also specialises in developing and implementing innovative service delivery models, which maximise efficiency and consistency of approach for our clients. James is responsible for our Real Estate relationships with a broad range of investors including UK and European institutions, fund managers, private equity houses and property companies.

James is a partner at Pinsent Masons LLP who operates in main stream transactional real estate work including property investment and development work .  He has specialised for the last 10 years in private healthcare investment, acting predominantly for investors who purchase (by way of completed asset acquisitions, corporate wrappers, forward purchases and forward funded developments) primary care centres, care homes, retirement villages and other specialist healthcare units.  In addition, James acts for a number of developers’ of healthcare assets and deals with acquisitions, asset management and disposals for a number of social care operators.   James leads a number of the real estate group’s key relationships, manages a cross office team internally and regularly advises on overall strategy and tactics for his clients.

Melanie is a partner who has specialised in construction law for over 15 years. Melanie has worked on energy and infrastructure projects in the UK and internationally and devised, drafted and negotiated complex and innovative contract structures. Melanie leads the team advising on the construction contracts for the London Array Offshore Wind Farm (the world’s largest offshore wind farm in operation) and is currently advising on another three offshore wind projects. In addition Melanie is very active in the nuclear sector, particularly nuclear decommissioning projects, acting for the NDA and private sector clients. Melanie has drafted and advised on contracts across the suite of standard forms and devised framework arrangements and incentive mechanics for accommodation, IT, energy efficiency, water and energy projects.

Simon is a partner with wide experience of project advisory work and dispute resolution in various sectors, acting for employers, contractors, consultants and specialist sub-contractors. Simon has for a number of years advised clients in disputes resolved by litigation, arbitration, adjudication and ADR (particularly mediation), but more recently the focus of his practice has been advisory work. In this field he provides strategic risk management and dispute avoidance advice to clients, drawing on his experience of standard form and bespoke procurement methods, notably PFI.
